Fell short across the board. Not complex. Maybe I just dont like Balblair? some spices and nutmeg pop up with oak and dried fruits, but thats all I got.

    Abandoned Flower Shop

Balblair recently changed from Vintages back to malts with age statements. Today, I will try an older release, from 2007, with a Balblair distilled in 1975, making it a 31 or 32 years old. That explains the price tag of around 450 EUR, but you’ll be hard pressed to still find a bottle.

Bittersweet nose with lots of herbal touches. Like I’m in an abandoned flower shop a week after the outbreak of the Corona virus, where the wilted bouquets urgently need to be thrown out into the dumpster. This off-note lingers annoyingly long in my glass (and no, it’s not the glass, I know this for a fact). After a lot of patience I get cigars, cherries, Seville oranges, leather and Coca-Cola candy.

The body is something between watery and oily. Luckily it’s all about sweetness and spices without any off-notes. Tobacco, black berries, peach, mocha, apple cake, raisins, liquorice and nutmeg. Just a tad to much tannins in my book, making it somewhat bitter.

The finish is medium long, very spicy and after a very sweet start on rhubarb and peach, it turns bitter and dry on oak, pepper and nutmeg.

I had high expectations of this one, but I feel it has been left in the cask for way too long.

I like it a lot, but more because its interesting and stimulating than because it's phenomenally tasty - it's tilting a bit too much to the bitter spectra for my mouth. However, there's a strong urge to go back and sip it again and again, just to explore the nuances
    • Nose

Light, honey, very sweet. Thinking pear here.
    • Taste
      88 88
woody bitterness, relatively spicy, dark honey/toffee sweetnesss.
    • Finish
      88 88
The woodiness stays on, and turns to bitter orange, the sweetness becomes lighter, and somewhat fruity.

Nose: Nice soft yellow fruit, very subtle sherry, some leather, little butterscotch, vanilla, later red fruit, very rich and complex. After a while something wet pebbles, subtle spices, a hint of gunpowder and some coffee.
Taste: Full, delicate sherry, red fruit, spicy, minerally touch of citrus
Finish: Sherry, red fruit, dark chocolate, spices, long finish.
    Score: 88

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Very rich. It's all in the poise, notes of smoke and vanilla dance with
veritable refinement. Also, warm berry fruits immersed in spiced cream.
Palate: Rich, lots of malted cereal notes and sugared barley.
Finish: Oak, still the cereal and barley notes are ubiquitous.

Reminded me a little of this whisky from Glenallachie but not as sherried.

The nose improves as does the palate and I get cola cube sweets (I get this a lot with sherried whisky)

I liked it but was expecting it to be better, I feel the whisky was in the cask for perhaps a couple of years too young but it is only a minor criticism.
    • Nose
Rich sherry and white chocolate mixed in with chocolate ice cream and pistachio nuts. There is also some wood varnish.
    • Taste
First impressions are quite good with coffee and mocha notes. There is also some bitterness at the back of the palate.

After a while I get raspberry and black current crumble.
    • Finish
Long and oaky with the sweetness of the sherry coming through at the end.

    Colour: Old gold.
Nose: Creamy, smooth, malty, fruity, with some peat smoke,
    honey and juicy barley.
Taste: Quite bitter, spicy, on coffee beans, smoke,
and dry raisins. The finish is medium, bitter, smoky, spicy, on coffee
General Impression: The nose is pleasantly smooth and fruity,
while it is rather bitter and on coffee on the palate.

It's a nice Balblair but it misses a real complexity in my view.
    • Nose
A bit restrained. Dried fruits. Polished oak. Later on more oranges and strawberries. Hints of sherry. Leafy as well.
    • Taste
Stewed fruit intermingled with green apples. Fruit cake. Raisins. Chocolate. Sappy. Slightly tanninic.
    • Finish
Medium long. Some spices of pepper and nutmeg. Later more bitterness.

    "A follow-up to the wildly successful 1979, this Balblair 1975 is a

bottling of 100% sherry casks. We are delighted that this

previously-overlooked distillery is now attracting serious attention.

It`s incredible what a bit of marketing spend and some snazzy packaging

can achieve when the stuff in the bottle is this good. As well as a Gold

Medal at the International Spirits Challenge 2008, this also won top

prize in its category at the World Whisky Awards 2010."
