The whisky might be young, but it's a pleasant session dram - unexpectedly good as there is no great history of whisky making in the country.
    • Nose
      82 82
An interesting nose - spice, hints of citrus, slightly dry.
    • Taste
      81 81
Very easy to drink - some spice at the edges, the sherry isn't particularly noticeable.
    • Finish
      81 81
Medium - the spice lingers for a while.

Balanced. Red fruits. Cinnamon. Honey. Spicy. Better than the wine cask elements but feels like a younger product from the peated cask.

On top of M&Hs ‘classic’ base [50%], this one sees an additional 50% oloroso/PX ‘element’.

N: A quieter/more reserved even astringent nose in comparison to the talkative red wine Element, drier if nuttier, and a savoury/sweet citrus as if between oloroso and palo cortado than oloroso and PX.

T: Remains somewhat astringent though salivating, and well managed to come across as un-managed, yes?
F: Cocoa barley sugar on top of a greasy textural mouthfeel.

C: If this style could mature, we could have something very special. Impressive as is. Very classy for such a young one.

For a young whisky, the overall impression is harmonious. However, if you are looking for a sherry bomb, you should look elsewhere.
    • Nose
      79 79
He needs some time in the glass. Then aromas like forest fruit jam appear in the nose and caramel is surprisingly noticeable (bourbon barrels send their regards). Alcohol is also noticeable. In addition, something fresh like a small dash of lemon, but overall rather a sweet impression ..
    • Taste
      81 81
Now the 1st sip and vanilla, caramel and light oak bitterness fill your mouth. Interesting: with the second sip, this takes a back seat and a herbal spiciness comes to the fore. In addition, there is an increased impression of dark chocolate. What I miss a little are the typical sherry flavors in a whisky with that name. In between, the alcohol occasionally reports a bit sharp and indicates that the age is under 5 years. With the addition of a little water, a few more fruit flavors can be tickled out and, interestingly, the mouthfeel immediately becomes smoother and oily.
    • Finish
      78 78
The finish develops over a medium length and remains roughly the same as a good espresso with a little sweetness - very pleasant.

Surprise blind dram during a tasting. Turned out interesting as well as quite sippable. Somewhat exotic flavor note on the back end for me which made me suspect a fortified wine like Sauternes instead of sherry - which is just not as prominent as in many Scotches. Certainly worth a try.

    Sweet & Sour

Milk & Honey launched the Elements Trilogy in 2020. The first one I’ll try is the Sherry which – as the name suggests – matured on oloroso and PX casks, while a part of bourbon matured malt was also added. The preparation of the casks was done under the watchful eye of a Rabbi to make sure they are kosher. M&H uses the world’s first kosher casks for their whisky.

While the basic whisky (Classic) is recognizable, this one is upholstered with red fruit, sultanas and figs as well as some blood oranges. Walnuts with a hint of wine vinegar. Unfortunately there is also an off-note in the nose that – luckily just for a moment – reminds me of sewage. No idea where that came from.

Good body. The influence of the sherry is rather limited, I must say. I taste mostly the Classic with just a bit of ‘sherry sauce’ if you know what I mean. Lots of spices like nutmeg, ginger and cloves. Midpalate it becomes sweeter and I suddenly also get some cherries. That makes up for a lot.

The finish is very pleasant, medium long and sweet & sour.

This one improved. Dubious nose, okay palate and good finish. Around 60 EUR. Thanks to Buds & Barrels for the sample.

Milk & Honey Elements series (Peated, Red Wine, Sherry cask)
    AUGUST 16, 2020GAL GRANOV 0

    Elements
Not long ago M&H distillery, based in Tel-Aviv Israel (very close to where I leave – Israel is not that big) have released 3 new expressions in their “Elements” line of produts. This follows the “Classic” which was released earlier this year. The Elements is part of M&H core range of single malt whiskies aged more than 3 years, as opposed to earlier editions of “young single malt” they have released before they have enough aged stock. It’s always nice to see a young distillery start producing core range whiskies, especially a distillery I am following very closely like M&H.

In order to launch the Elements In Israel the guys at M&H organized a nice Zoom tasting (sign O’ the times) led by Tomer Goren (master distiller), Tal Chotiner (Export Manager). In the Zoom tasting we tasted all 3 new Elements expressions, and of course the “Classic” which is the baseline..

    M&H Classic , 46% abv , ₪200
This is the first official commercial expression from the distillery. The whisky was aged in Ex-Bourbon and ex-Wine cask (STR).

Nose: The nose needs time to open, you should give it a few minutes in the glass, as initial nosing is a bit harsh, but after 5-8 minutes, it really tones down revealing nice vanilla notes, some citrus peel, soft oak, and a mild fruitiness, maybe red berries (there are some STR wine casks in the vatting so that is not surprising). all in all very mellow, and well-composed.

Palate: easy drinking with a light-ish body, still on the same vanilla, wood, sweet barley sugars, oak, and a hint of pepper/ginger that adds a nice touch, getting dry towards the finish.

Finish: Short and sweet with more dry wood, spice, bitter chocolate, and char.

Conclusion : A nice entry level young whisky, it does not suffer from the maladies of youth , and clearly well blended. At 200 ILS it’s well priced as well.

    Score: 80/100
On we go to the first ‘Element’ – the sherry cask. The whisky was aged in KOSHER sherry casks which were specially made for the distillery in Jerez, Spain, and supervised by a Rabbi as to attest to their Kosher (these are the first kosher certificate casks in the world!) The whisky is aged in both ex-bourbon and ex-Sherry casks which are both PX / Oloroso, as well as STR wine casks and ex-bourbon.

Nose: Nice sweet entry with quite a bit of red fruit, sultanas, and dry figs, oaky notes add to the balance, as well as some citrus zest – some lemon and also a dash of ripe blood orange. sour wine vinegar and almonds, and maybe a hint of marzipan, chocolate, and caramel.

Palate: Nice body, with good sherry sweetness, more of the red fruit, and again the sultana and dried fruit – but this is not a sherry bomb, a nice balance of the dried fruit, chocolate and the fresh sour-ish fruit (cherries), toasted oak.

Finish: Medium with a very nice chocolate-y touch, more oak, and sweet wine tannin, then drying.

Conclusion : If you’re looking for a sherry bomb – look elsewhere. The sherry is dominant, but it is nicely balanced by the STR casks and ex-bourbon which add to a sour, woody sweet caramel notes. Very good balance in this one – good blending.
