Head to head tasting with the fantastic John Locke Pure Pot Still (WB 159450). This Kilbeggan/Brusna expression has a very different profile and has probably been bottled for export just after 1957 when the distillery celebrated its 200yo of existence (the label states that the whiskey is made for 200 years). Unfortunately a year later all activities stopped...until 2007 when the distillery (with other stills) was resurrected by Cooley and later Beam Suntory. This expression is also a winner but it is all about sherry and has no trace of earthy peat.
    • Nose
The nose starts great with notes of juicy prunes and old sherry wood with a slightly burnt edge. Followed with stewed figs and dates. Raisins and hints of the best balsamic vinegar available. Whiff of moss, mushrooms and humus as well. Later on touch of mint and eucalyptus. The sherry notes are not a coincidence. The back label of a similar big bottle of this whiskey I have in my collection, states that it is guaranteed to be fully matured in sherry wood (and bottled in bond). No doubt, it's all very pleasant.
    • Taste
Rich and round with bitter dark chocolate, X-mas cake, dried apricot and sultanas. Blue berries and black currants. Also mocha, cigar leafs and pine resin. Honey with a perfect combination of oranges, caraway, orange blossom honey. There's no reference to (pure) pot still on the label, but the robust oiliness mouth feel of old pot still whiskey is definitely there.
    • Finish
Long and sweet. Black pepper and a little nutmeg. Raspberry liqueur, some liquorice and fudge at the end. Perfectly balanced. What a pleasure to be able to taste this Irish whiskey history.
