    a very successful 2nd step
I'm very surprised how good the Still Young is at only 8 years old

    mmh, I like them indeed
    • Nose
      Smoke, caramel,
and here now (at Very Young not yet) clearly maritime notes
Sea, salt, again a nice citrus note and dark peat
    • Taste
Wow very beautiful peat smoke with sweetness, chocolate on the palate is dark and dry, coffee notes, a little citrus, a tingle on the tongue and palate .. dried cherries
    • Finish
      long,
dark chocolate, salt and malty sweetness ... my salt liquorice, slightly smoky peat ... delicious! An Islay finish

  2. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    young, very direct torfer.
    • Nose
very direct peat, young, maritime, some sewing machine oil, beautiful fruit notes, tendency citrus, could also be something sour apple. Sweet and fragrant, maybe a bit dirty, musty at the end.
    • Taste
very straightforward, slightly vegetal, grassy, peaty, becoming very sweet in the mouth over time. Very unusual, but really good. Vanilla, sugar bomb, with lots of peat, some pepper.
    • Finish
peppery, sweet, peaty, the grassy notes are still there, in the end slightly tart, but with sweet undertones.

  3. Petitcham scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

When the airing condition is good; Peat and smoke emitted more intensely from the finish than supernova 2019

  4. Kensay scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

Even too lazy to spend letters on this whisky. It is absolutely not clear where such prices come from, for such a weak release.
Iodine, lemons and peat, dry wood, straight, flat. This is not even interesting to drink for free.

  5. gossm01 scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

It has a relatively oily viscosity and its bouquet is of relatively strong intensity. I have aromas of dry peat smoke, citrus, marine notes, ash, honey sweetness, malt and vanilla. Not very complex. A good balance between sweetness and dryness in terms of taste. The alcohol is well integrated for his young age and he has a relatively heavy body.

[September, 2014]  I had this dram during an Ardbeg-Masterclass tasting at Bonn.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 80 points only.  My notes state it is immature and unbalanced.

Great, simple but balanced whisky. Special treat
    • Nose
Indeed young, maritime smoke with a lot of salt, vanilla, white peach and light sweet citrus (pomelo). Despite young age, it is still very fruity and aromatic, love it
    • Taste
Oily, sweet creamy vanilla, burned hay smoke, light honey, white pepper. Pretty simple but with great balance between smoke and creamy sweetness
    • Finish
Long, sweet, smoky, vanilla, white pepper. Natural evolution of taste in very long and balanced finish

  8. pere scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

In comparison to Very Young, Almost There and Renaissance to me Still Young has always been the most maritime one and closer to Renaissance than the Almost There.

  9. maltaholic scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Yes, he looks young, a straw-colored yellow.

But it smells good, doesn't overwhelm me with smoke.
It is rather subtle, leaving the wood its place.
But it also smells strong and has a lot of bangs.
There's a hint of carnation and something sweet in the background ...

It surprises in the mouth, doesn't burn straight away, looks creamy and soft ...
but then it comes, develops spicy aromas, all very intense and strong.
Appears a bit furry, a lot of barrel aromas, bitter spices.

    The smoke continues to recede.
Now there is also a hint of vanilla.
It just keeps getting better ...

    • Nose
initially slightly acidic, asbestos, ash, citrus flavors, machine oil, a little dirty. Later spices, a little like pumpkin compote with clove. A little later: aromas of lemons, smoke, tar, spices. Yes, now like an Ardbeg again :)
    • Taste
with a small start, warm, sweet, spices and smoke, some tar, slightly oily,
somewhat spicy, oak, barrel, coffee, lemons, some candied, some ash.
Pleasantly engaging, delicious! | Lukewarm alcohol comes through ...

      + H2O:
sweetish, smoke, tar, somewhat softer and fruity, yes, the addition of water is good for him. Spices and condiments, barrel and coffee, clove.
    • Finish
Lemon notes, some smoke and tar, slightly spicy, long fades away with a hint of ash.

    The Ardbeg Still Young - the second (of four) bottlings on the "Peaty Path to Maturation", Limited Edition 2006;
A young but good Islay Malt!
    [Color] white wine;
    • Nose
      fresh lime, grapefruit, alcohol, lots of smoke, vanilla;
    • Taste
      diluted: a powerful earthy onion, smoke, chilli-spicy, sweet, vanilla, maritime, salty;
    • Finish
      very short finish, metallically young and sweet, with a lot of ash in the finish;

  15. theograph scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Young, impetuous, slightly bitter; the 10yo standard convinces more!
    • Nose
Smoke, lemon, tar, gum, salt, varnish, pepper, very robust.
    • Taste
Soft (flat), lacquer, lemon, salt, pepper, yellow fruits, juniper, oak, mint, herbs, medicinal notes, slightly spicy and bitter.
    • Finish
Oak, bitter, lemon, salt, fish, mint.

    • Nose
      Blind Sample:

      Colour:
      Pale straw

      Nose:
So without directly to smell, comes pouring a decent amount of smoke out ...... I'm curious
Sweetish-spicy smoke. Has something salty and dirty. I know that I know the smoke. Brackish seawater, something of stewed plastic. But also a sweetish malty. Some leather, pepper and dry grain. After some life comes a kind of engine oil. Also gets sweeter and more fruity. Orange, lemon and a trace of licorice. But then goes more into the medical. The alcohol is very well integrated and more in the background.
    • Taste
Soft, oily, smoky onset. Then spice up properly. It makes room for sweet honey, light fruit, coconut and some salt. Very oily mouthfeel. Even slightly chocolaty, I would say. The second sip of bisserl bitter espresso is added and a certain herbal note.
    • Finish
Medium to long. First properly seasoning and smoke. Followed by herbs and a certain bitterness. To end it`s then oily sweet with malt and some licorice.

A young smoker without major crafting mistakes. Not overly complex, which is hardly surprising given the age. Away from it a clear pointer to the later Ardbeg Ten and ideally suited to get to know the Brennereicher character of Ardbeg. If you were to serve him blind among many, the story about the malt would be more interesting than the malt itself. Personally, I like him and I'm glad to have some of it at home.
    • Nose
Typical of many young smokers and especially Arbeg - citrus fruits. Many citrus notes in front of clear smoke, from time to time a few bourbon notes flash. Some vanilla, a few sweet oak notes. The alcohol is present, but does not bother me. Overall, very fresh and slightly maritime, as a fierce I would not really want to call him, rather powerful.
With increasing time in the glass, the sweetish flavors gain in profile and become more dominant.
    • Taste
The 56.2% Vol. Forcefully push the malt on the tongue. First, the mixture of sweet vanilla, licorice, honey and citrus, which is well-known from the nose, flashes before it becomes noticeably bitter. Light oak, the anticipated smoke - these two components are pushing forward and crushing this flaring sweetness until almost nothing is left. Slightly dry now dominates spicy oak, recognizable youth on the palate.
    • Finish
Strong, spicy, rather short. The smoke remains a bit, but by no means as determining and lasting as many of Islay's young Malts today (eg Kilchoman). Here are clearly youthful features at the Ardbeg up to a slightly metallic note. Basically little wonder, but here to recognize clearly.

  31. Bosi scored this whisky 82 points Specialist

One clearly tastes the distillate character, although not yet one hundred percent developed. A real step on the way to Ardbeg Ten. Due to the missing age unfortunately the complexity remains on the track.
    • Nose
At the beginning surprisingly fruity with apricot and lemon. There are also classic bourbon barrel notes such as vanilla and honey. Behind everything, the smoke hovers over ashes. With water, the nose is a bit weak and it comes out mint.
    • Taste
The smoke in the taste is much stronger than in the aroma. The Ardbeg is still really spicy like a chili. Add to that the sweetness of dark chocolate and some coffee.
    • Finish
The finish is powerful but quickly fleeting. Unfortunately, the whisky seems a bit one-dimensional and bitter. You can taste the youth. The sharpness of the taste continues in the finish.

Already delicious, but still with a lot of potential upwards. As annoying I feel the mouth feeling or leaving feeling with biting and deafness - that was the Very Young so not present and indicates a little worse integrated alcohol
    • Nose
Creamy / buttery with some sweetness and clear peach flavors, with slightly sour and moist, phenolic smoke, in addition I find a slight sharpness as with freshly cut onions
    • Taste
Spicy notes of cloves or nutmeg, licorice and peach jam, nice sweet and sour combination
    • Finish
A bit bitter, to the tongue and lips on the acid, it remains smoke and a slight numbness in the mouth

This is the second release in Ardbeg`s journey to the new 10yo. Still Young was released in 2006 and continued to succeed in the `path to peaty maturity` as the marketing types called it. A refreshing dram with great intensity.

An amazing ardbeg, as JM said in his bible - "This is a very good natural age for an Ardbeg.... Go on be bold. Be proud. Say it.  Ardbeg Aged 8 Year. Get away from the marketing straightjacket of old age!"

Question: Anyone know how many bottling`s of this there was?

  47. mmaclean scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

At first it took me some time to come around to the Peat side of scotch.

This version was highly recommended and since then, it has been harder

to come by. I have appreciated it now that I have learned that you need

to savor the flavor on this one for a good two three minutes to get the

full span. If you were to just pour and sip and drink down like it was

juice, you would lose so much of the work that went into this beauty,

enjoy if you can find it.

    • Nose
Salt, sea alga, peat with light iodine aromas, pears and lemon. Some notes of an old warehouse, maybe a construction site. Apparently it has ball, but seems to be immature and spicy.
    • Taste
Too much spirit at start, some sourness, pepper, salt, and sea breeze. Additionally a lot of peat and citrus notes, green apples, salty water, a little bit of smoke.
    • Finish
Very long, strongly peaty with hints of pepper, salty nuts and a lot of sea notes with honey.
