Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1995 DD

Unique profile that I really find superior to the sum of its parts. Not any sherried Clynelish is well-balanced ; this one is. A little bit of tannicity prevents it from being really grand.

A ravishing composition that's just not to be found anywhere else. Old school, dare I say. Earth and tahini, a lot of fresh walnuts, something like an oxidative wine (probably close to vin Jaune). These aspects are counterbalanced by some rounder elements that really make the whole picture so charming : polished woods (it feels "waxy" in a way but without really smelling like wax, hard to describe), orange blossom, baklava's. Aeration makes it even more expressive with ideas of blueberries and blood orange, echoing the woody waxiness. Even further down we have complex notes of pine needles and rooibos, this is really complex yet very cohesive, superb nose that ressembles nothing else.

The attack is initially quite fresh but gets slightly tannic for a while, before getting back on a duo of earthy and aromatic woody tones. Walnuts, forest soil, humus, then gets very waxy (frankly waxy this time), oxidative wine again. It might be a little less complex than the nose but the texture and the ability it has to hold its profile for a long time are remarkable. Further sips have some more of the nose's aromatic elements, with beloved notes of orange blossom and even strawberries (maybe rather a strawberry syrup).

Very nice woody wax transitioning to a more citrusy register (hurray !) with bitter pink grapefruit. The bitter and lightly woody side of this citrus side might evoke some kind of IPA. The waxy woods are still hanging there, bringing a little tannic drought, but all in all it is very clean and especially very long.

Color: mahogany, copper highlights, tending towards greenish (Magnificent color)
Nose: leather, clay, an earthy side which, after opening, gives way to fruit, baked apple, wild strawberry.
Palate: excellent! Complex, on fruit, nuts, light almond.
    Final: on the strawberry compote.

    comments: fabulously integrated alcohol.
    Thank you Gérard.

profile a bit too much in line with the label: Clynelish, so the wax. Sherry: so dry fruits and sulfur.

Tasted at the end of the show, so taste buds a little tired.

    Enthusiasm 3/5

Clynelish and sherry are an unequal music. Neither here. Not there. On a blind tasting, can it be identified as a 23yo Clynelish? No, in my personal opinion.

    Colour:Mahogany.

Nose: Classic style notes. Sherry but rounded. Caramel. Ripened bananas with some oak spice. Lovely. A bit of sulphur but goodness me it is not overwhelming. Prunes. Some menthol. Candies.

Palate: Wow... quite intense, mouth coating & a sherry bomb. Lacks that delicate waxy & bubble gum texture of clynelish but peppery, woody, spicy and sweet sherry. Rich. Warm. Spicy. There is a struggle between the distillery character and the cask. That’s the best part or the worst part.
Not viscous but the ABV makes it quite intense yet savoury.

Finish: Long. Warm. Juicy. Peppery. Some sherry sweetness and perhaps at this juncture does the paraffin, waxy notes of the distillery character kicks in.

Easier written than tasted. One of the most unusual yet good Clynelish.

    nose:
velvety, sweetness, freshness of undergrowth, slightly sweet-salty, juicy nuts, maple syrup too
macerated fruit, some mold and dried mushrooms then, and well-aged walnut wine
    mouth:
nectar of cooked fruits (peach, pear, tangerine) and spicy scents, a bit of undergrowth still, well peppery spices, salted caramel, cold coffee, tobacco scent too
nuts, well candied and macerated fruit, a grassy and minty return, a mineral sensation (water in the pipes), a bit of hairspray finally with cold fruity tea and a bacon sauce
    final:
woody, sweet, velvety, tobacco and leather!
    long feeling
    10.8

Greatly balanced, the nose is incredibly versatile and constantly evolving, initial mouthfeel very engaging yet not overwhelming before just fading out quietly.
Underwhelming finish keeps it from being one of the greatest.

Old school freshness, deeply complex. Fresh and earthy notes at front. Sesame ice cream, salt, ripe banana peel, clay, walnuts, wax looms around the atmosphere. The sherry makes for a background of sweet fruits. Milk chocolate with hazelnuts, kiwi juice? I could get lost in this place.
    • Taste
      91 91
Surprising! Fresh, Intense and oily. Wax and herbal spices coat the mouth, there's sandalwood and very fruity citrus, intense dry earthy notes and fresh herbs. The combination reminds me of a Tom Ford fragrance, masculine and elegant.
There's also bubblegum, beeswax and some sherry fruits to be found.
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium intensity, long length. Waxy wood, Citra Indian Pale Ale. A sweet milk chocolate note lingers on.
