Not for sherry fetishists, but a dream for fans of the unadulterated Highland Park Brennereicharakters. Mild and mellow, without any pungency (which the OBs sometimes already show at much lower filling levels), so that all flavors are immediately accessible and present. So far the best UA-HP I have had. Chapeau.

Typical and wonderfully clear HP character, with heather honey, kräutrigen aspects, and this very special, slightly ashy and scary aromatic peat smoke that's nowhere else. That the previous barrel occupation - apart from perhaps a subtle Nussigkeit - plays virtually no role, is a real plus. You can tell that the fabric is mellow and not quite young, but not because of some kind of woodiness. Praise the refill barrel. Price it! [At least at Highland Park ...]

This is where the nymph plays her trumps. Super juicy and inherently complex, just by the long matured HP Spirit. Ashy, sour, sweet, salty: there is virtually the whole taste spectrum activated. Deliciously tart, but without actual bitterness (as found in almost the same age Cask Orkney). Wonderfully mild in cask strength, no water necessary.
    • Finish
      89 89
Herb and also honey sweet (you have to get it first), with a clear maritime / salty impact and a never ending gentle smoky note. That's the way it has to be.

In the smell very complex, whereby the alcohol initially covers a lot, but always lets flavors through.

On the palate, there is a lot again, what the nose has already promised. Here comes a little more sherry and it constantly flashing on other flavors.
The finish is long and pleasant.

A difficult whisky, very complex but not tasty. He needs a lot of time, air and attention and does not get bored.

The barrel did not have much of the sherry and I would probably have typed blindly on an ex-bc.

With water, it is immediately fruity and smoother, I like it better, but loses some of its complexity.

fresh, spicy, cereals, pale honey, light fruits, pears, honeydew melon, hair spray, sea breeze, light smoke, nutmeg, dusty wood. Occasionally a hint of dark fruit will flash, maybe plums, but that's quickly gone. Grated lemon peel, lemon grass, weak peppermint, malt, ash, black pepper, coffee powder

oily, light spicy, pickled fruits ... pear, pepper, tart forest honey, creamy, plum syrup, liquorice ... cough syrup, tannins, peppermint, coffee beans, malt, cereal notes. Again, something new is constantly flashing up, very interesting.
    • Finish
      87 87
long, oily, tannins and unsweetened peppermint tea, cold smoke and some ashes

I am not an HP fan and reviews are also too lengthy for me, but since this whisky was burned on 23.11.1999, exactly 20 years ago on my 9th birthday, I wanted to announce that during my third grade a really fine whisky was born, which has rekindled the curiosity about this distillery. Many thanks to Whic for this treat.

Water: it does not need at all, but with a few drops it becomes even softer, rounder and more pleasant

Conclusion: As is so often the case, refill sherry barrels are the better choice for those who want a longer maturation period. Although I would rather tap a 3rd refill or a Finosherry barrel. The balanced interplay of aromas between the yellow fluff, vanilla, the sea character and the light Heidetorf aroma is great - a really very good HP!
    • Nose
Fine! Yellow plum, light heather peat smoke with a hint of almonds, a few almonds, the oak is pleasantly reserved and brings a few spice notes with pure (cinnamon), a little honey, subtle salt wrap, peach jam, a few lemons, overall very soft and balanced, come out at the back a few more tobacco leaves to the fore
    • Taste
Bämm, great sweetness, light smoke, some fruits (yellow plum, pear), in addition a balanced flavor from the barrel, vanilla
    • Finish
long, beautiful vanilla, here again light heather aromas with honey, a few herbs and a little smoke with a tendency towards campfire ash

    • Taste

Maybe I'm just a bit of "fruit-blind", who knows ... That I'm dealing here with a refill sherry butt is certainly not necessarily for me ...
    • Nose
      84 84
Citrus notes, orange zest, brackish water, heather, tobacco
    • Taste
      84 84
Extinct campfire, earth, milk chocolate, spices, not quite ripe figs
    • Finish
      83 83
medium long, spicy-dry, cocoa, gentle peat smoke, quite a bit off a light fruit note
