Whisky Reviews for Secret Orkney Distillery 1999 whic

  1. DerDennis! scored this whisky 88 points Specialist

In the smell very complex, whereby the alcohol initially covers a lot, but always lets flavors through.

On the palate, there is a lot again, what the nose has already promised. Here comes a little more sherry and it constantly flashing on other flavors.
The finish is long and pleasant.

A difficult whisky, very complex but not tasty. He needs a lot of time, air and attention and does not get bored.

The barrel did not have much of the sherry and I would probably have typed blindly on an ex-bc.

With water, it is immediately fruity and smoother, I like it better, but loses some of its complexity.

fresh, spicy, cereals, pale honey, light fruits, pears, honeydew melon, hair spray, sea breeze, light smoke, nutmeg, dusty wood. Occasionally a hint of dark fruit will flash, maybe plums, but that's quickly gone. Grated lemon peel, lemon grass, weak peppermint, malt, ash, black pepper, coffee powder
    • Taste
      88 88
oily, light spicy, pickled fruits ... pear, pepper, tart forest honey, creamy, plum syrup, liquorice ... cough syrup, tannins, peppermint, coffee beans, malt, cereal notes. Again, something new is constantly flashing up, very interesting.
    • Finish
      87 87
long, oily, tannins and unsweetened peppermint tea, cold smoke and some ashes

Not for sherry fetishists, but a dream for fans of the unadulterated Highland Park Brennereicharakters. Mild and mellow, without any pungency (which the OBs sometimes already show at much lower filling levels), so that all flavors are immediately accessible and present. So far the best UA-HP I have had. Chapeau.

Typical and wonderfully clear HP character, with heather honey, kräutrigen aspects, and this very special, slightly ashy and scary aromatic peat smoke that's nowhere else. That the previous barrel occupation - apart from perhaps a subtle Nussigkeit - plays virtually no role, is a real plus. You can tell that the fabric is mellow and not quite young, but not because of some kind of woodiness. Praise the refill barrel. Price it! [At least at Highland Park ...]

This is where the nymph plays her trumps. Super juicy and inherently complex, just by the long matured HP Spirit. Ashy, sour, sweet, salty: there is virtually the whole taste spectrum activated. Deliciously tart, but without actual bitterness (as found in almost the same age Cask Orkney). Wonderfully mild in cask strength, no water necessary.
    • Finish
      89 89
Herb and also honey sweet (you have to get it first), with a clear maritime / salty impact and a never ending gentle smoky note. That's the way it has to be.

Interesting drop that wants to be discovered, okay from the alcohol point of view, definitely better with water. A rainbow warrior! :)
    • Nose
      87 87
Ripe old lemon, matrix paper (from the good old days), some ashes, then nothing at first.
10min and 2-3 drops of water later: Now we are talking!
Sauna infusion with pine oil, and so slowly I arrive on the Orkney Islands, and the 1999 BR with WID: 108315 comes to mind as "brother".
    • Taste
      88 88
Honey is not directly there, but a subliminal sweetness, the lemon is absorbed in a complex wooden construction, but the coarse hatchet remains at home, here it is delicately chased: very elegant in the mouth and yet lively and a sweet and sour battle changes again and again .
    • Finish
      88 88
In the end there is grapefruit (an ugly German word), i.e. grapefruit, which is sweetened and served on a natural board. At the end and with a lot of chewing, there are floral and honey aromas that I really like. Interesting development!

I am not an HP fan and reviews are also too lengthy for me, but since this whisky was burned on 23.11.1999, exactly 20 years ago on my 9th birthday, I wanted to announce that during my third grade a really fine whisky was born, which has rekindled the curiosity about this distillery. Many thanks to Whic for this treat.

Pleasant malt, quite fresh in profile. It's also great as a summer whisky in my opinion.
    • Nose
Intense citrus fruits, looks very fresh, some smoke, subtly sweet, herbs, some oak, maritime notes, the alcohol is a bit noticeable and then the smoke becomes a bit more intense. Hay comes through as well as white fruits and grains
    • Taste
malty, herbs, sweet, again the citrus fruits on the nose, maritime notes here too, later a bit spicy, light fruits and some grain notes
    • Finish
Citrus-heavy, sweet, strong, slightly salty maritime notes merging into fresh herb aromas.

    • Nose
      88 88
Mineral citrus notes, light maritime smoke, pastries, alcohol present, flowery
    • Taste
      88 88
Citrus fruits, smoky and creamy, nice pleasant flavor, heat and dryness slowly take over without being run over
    • Finish
      89 89
An unexpectedly mild finish, the spice and smoke are still there, but the pastries and creaminess dominate

A decent highland park. The sherry barrel is very reserved and is more reminiscent of a bourbon barrel. With a little water it looks even fuller and the alcohol is steamed.
It's good to drink, but it's nothing that makes me completely nervous.
