For a nine-year-old whisky, this is excellent.
Does need quite a bit of water and patience to get the balance right, though. Too sharp without water.
Improves mightily in the open bottle.

Enticingly floral and creamy-sweet. Semolina pudding with caramel, hibiscus blossoms, pear pulp, grapes, sugared grapefruit. With water, it becomes even more floral and fragrant.

Surprisingly sweet – the bourbon barrel has left its mark. It's interesting to see that Clynelish's famous mineralic side, while already present, seems to develop more and become stronger as the spirit increases in age. Undiluted, the focus lies on high-fructose-corn-syrup sweetness as well as floral and fruity aspects (a lot of citrus). Water brings out more spicy oak, stretches out and differentiates the flavor development, with everything becoming more crisp.

Sweet/sour/spicy with a chalky tinge and a peppery kick from the oak. Can't quite hide its young age at this point.

First of all delicious, but you can tell the alcohol stings your nose easily. Young, that's clear. If you miss the alcohol, then it's nice and classic clynelish. Salty, very maritime, a little mineral and then also slightly dirty rubber. The typical clynelish mineral scent wars with brush cleaner. Sometimes it smells like clynelish, then it tips over into the brush cleaner or turpentine or something.
Hidden behind these notes and the alcohol I find tropical fruits, they are very tasty. In addition, a little vanilla and slightly tart oak. Some grass?
For the age there is quite a bit of complexity, but only if you can smell the alcohol in the glass.
It continues exactly the same in the mouth, which for me is a very logical continuation of all aspects of the nose. A little darker honey is added, and finally, as it should be, the beeswax. The brush cleaner is no longer strong to taste.
The finish is long with tart and spicy oak, some black pepper and still a lot of alcohol. The dark honey sticks to the palate.

Delicious paints, but clearly too young and too stinging for me. If you pass the liquor the flavors are great. Difficult to rate ...

I know this received some rather nice reviews, most notably 90 points from Ruben of WhiskyNotes, but it's really not that good to be honest.. (As an aside, I do think Ruben is a great reviewer, but this was definitely a miss from him).

A bit of new plastic smell, some mothballs, sugar cane juice, daikon. New make, smells a bit like some 3-6 year old Japanese.. ie.. It's kinda young, but enough weirdness to make it interesting. Definitely not your routine nose. Not terrible, but not that good either... Not sure what I should expect from the taste to follow...

Okay, sharp, a bit pungent, bready, and sweet... got some oomph for sure. After a while, a bit of lemons and some butter cookies. The strength warms me up a bit during this cold night in New York City. Waxy, sure, since this is Clynelish. An unremarkable palate that reminds me of some nondescript, high strength Rare Malts from middling distilleries.

Lengthy finish, but lacking much complexity. Luckily, I didn't get a bottle, just a 1 oz sample. Why was this bottled so young?
