[October, 2021] A 12-years old Highland Park with rather low rating, is this because the name is not stated on the label or because of its inherit quality deficits...

...and the nose is sub-standard but both taste and finish are very nice, especially after adding some water to this high-proof dram. This is very quaffable stuff at a more affordable price than the OBs, especially if you do not insist on an impressive nosing before every sip.
    • Nose
      85 85
The colour is pale gold and the nose offers the typical profile of a leached cask with a rather immature and shy aromas profile. It is not bad and certainly there are no off-notes but I expect a little more from a 12-years old, not to mention Highland Park. After adding some water the nose opens up (somewhat) with honeys, autumn floral aromas and spices but still this is not impressive.
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is better with more mature flavours, among them all trademark HP impressions like juicy barley sugars, heather honey, some peat, autumn florals and spices. Hey, this compensates for the rather weak (neat) nose and it is nicely chewable. After that the sugars combine to a delicious impression of a spiced milk chocolate. No flaw or imbalance that I can find.
    • Finish
      89 89
The dram arrives hot (no wonder at 60.4% abv) and instantly coating on my palate, actually this is a pretty good mouthfeel without distracting moments (except for the hotness of the high proof). The finish is long and adds more floral and herbal impressions with a minor bitter-drying ending which is not annoying at all. Water turns the dram smoother and releases more sweet flavours, among them fruits and stronger honeys notes. This is an excellent swimmer and I suggest to experiment a little at different reduction levels. I like it best at around 50% abv.
