The nose is very fine, but the mouth is closer to my expectations. Very nice.
    • Nose
      88 88
      Very fine, ashy peat.
      With aeration a little citrus.
      Pepper, eucalyptus, almonds.
It's fine, but ultimately a little simple.
    • Taste
      91 91
On the palate the peat has more character. Oilier, more herbaceous, while remaining precise.
Lemon, candied and in zest. Orange, quince.
      Pepper, light salted butter caramel.
      Barbecue smoke.

43% but yet, we do not feel the reduction in the mouth.
    • Finish
      87 87
Final that we would have liked longer, on ashy peat, smoke, pepper, a very light bacon, and graphite.

Rather shy peat, only little smoke (for an Ardbeg)

Head 2 head I could not spot any difference between the 1998 bottling of the Ardbeg 1978 and this one bottled 1999.
    • Nose
      90 90
Slight seabreeze, iodine, fine peat and smoke, some teaish notes, hints of vanilla - pretty good
    • Taste
      90 90
Punchy, oily, creamy, little sweetness, little fruity, more teaish notes, little peaty, little smoky, little herbal, hints of vanilla - still good
    • Finish
      89 89
Long, warm, zesty, little more punchy, little more herbal

Not as maritime as the 75 and 77 more on vanilla and caramel but still very enjoyable

An old Ardbeg elegant with its excellent melted nose and mellow palate. Just a bit too diluted.

    Tasting notes from july 2017.
    • Nose
First nosing brings a gentle peat with diesel oils. The latters disappear quickly with aeration leaving some faint tarry notes in the background. The nose stays refined with medicinal (iodine), ashy/sooty, leathery, smoky and almondy notes now.
    • Taste
The dilution is apparent but the tarry, sooty, smoky and medicinal notes from the nose remain. Some lemon and pine resin too.
    • Finish
      Medium, briny and lemony.

Bacon and sweet smoke, completely melted. Not very intense to start. Discreet malt. And it slowly increases in volume. Malt, but also honey and almonds. We have completely forgotten the peat at this stage. In the mouth, little return of the peat, precisely. Very honeyed, very nice. It lacks a bit of corpulence, I would say. An Ardbeg at 43%, it does not run the streets! A fine and delicate dram.

    Enthusiasm 4/5

Amazing sweet nose, a little salt, no smoke. Tasty and soft. Subtle maritime notes with salt and algae and still resonates with a little sweetness. On the tongue remains a delicious, but slightly bitter aroma. Very round, soft malt with delicious flavors!
