Whisky reviews for Auchentoshan 1998 HEB

One user has left a review for this whisky. Average rating is 79.33 points.

  1. rottendon scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Acts like a diluted young malt. Probably the most unspectacular of this year's Advent calendar. Not my cup of tea.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Oh, a blank slate, we'll describe it ...
From my point of view, this is a completely atypical Auchentoshan, so atypical that I, although it was known that one of this and a second one had to be at Auchentoshan, ruled out that for this one.
I've just tried it again, for me it's about 20ppm of smoke, from nose to finish. Well, that can't be, so it must be a side effect of the off-notes, as well as the acidity and the exaggerated bitterness. I was clearly at Ardmore, peated Glenturret or Knockdhu. Then there was the alcohol, which was incredibly rough for 50%, triple distilled? The age is also hard to believe.
Whatever went wrong at Auchentoshan when they distilled it, these are the bottlings that earned Auchentoshan this dubious reputation as a backbench distillery, because they are really good at it, as many a Cadenhead bottling proves.
The points were given here with clear benevolence, and you could stay well below 80.
    • Nose
      81 81
Ouch, that's nasty at first! Absolute chemo club, rubber, ammonia, fortunately after a few moments these notes have completely disappeared. Strong mineral notes in front of extremely restrained yellow fruitiness are now present, overall very closed. After a few minutes, dark caramel and possibly an idea of smoke. After standing for a while, it looks much more sedate, more caramel, mineral acid, still looks as if there were a few ppm smoke. Movement closes it again immediately. The nose is warmed up much more intensely, but also more alcoholic. As for the smoke, I'm pretty sure now, it even dominates now. The fruits are gone, only a trace of caramel can be made out. Maybe some liquorice too.
    • Taste
      80 80
Sparkling start, the mouthfeel is rather thin, but the alcohol is biting. However, it hardly warms the chest area, in this respect it seems rather weak. On the aroma side, as in the nose, not much is happening, mainly a somewhat artificial sweetness, sugar water, and an indefinable slight bitterness are present. The smoke seems to be confirmed here, especially towards the back it feels quite ashy. In the second sip there is also a slight acidity, the bitterness becomes clearer towards the back.
    • Finish
      80 80
The finish is quite short and unspectacular. After a short drying time, only a little ash remains on the palate for a short time. Reheating does not take place.
