Whisky Reviews for Bowmore 1997

38 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 91.31 points

Stop press for the name change: Wowmore.

2cl sample and liking every drop of it. A perfect example that heavy sherry does not need to smother distillery profile and doesn't need to be woody. David knew what to choose.

A few drops of water are recommended.

It's already a stunner, rarely experienced another distillery that goes so well with dark sherry.
    • Nose
as expected fat, oily, creamy, heavy, heavy sherry, furniture polish, oak, subtle smoke, which definitely plays the second fiddle, tobacco, slightly floral, some caramel, a breeze of mint, some malt and chocolate, in fact, despite the whole Sherryfracht also room for other flavors, for me altogether just right and not over it
    • Taste
oily, creamy, a bit of bowmore violet, sherry, raisins, also here a lot of wood, oak, light smoke, pleasant, floral, overall not quite as intense as expected from the nose, but very pleasant to drink
    • Finish
drier from behind, sweet plums on the palate, astringent, hardly any smoke, menthol, fresh, long-lasting

100 ???? but after, what a disappointment !! or there are some who drink only that !!!

  5. Gloin scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

The smell is intense and heavy, old, ripe, deep, leaves nothing to be desired.
According to the nose, one almost expects the taste to be disappointing, the bar is so high, but far from it. The taste does not diminish compared to the smell.
Only the finish could be a bit more intense and complex at this level.
A big, a wonderful Bowmore! It has to be that way.
    • Nose
At first the Bowmore smells a bit closed, but then, after a while, it opens with force: light smoke, leather, old books, bound in leather, raisins, sherry, a little black currant, is there a hint of Bowmore violet ?, dry wood
    • Taste
Medium attack, delicate astringency, then sweet and heavy, plum, currant, raisin, spicy, not bitter wood, dark chocolate, black tea, accompanied by a slight smoky note, barely noticeable, but always there
    • Finish
Black tea, light smoke, spicy oak, no bitterness, less sweet, plum, a hint of cinnamon, long but not long enough

Beautiful Bowmore, which is dominated by the sherry barrel, but not in terms of bitterness, but about the red fruits. I like it!
    • Nose
      93 93
Despite the 51.7% vol. only slightly alcoholic, withered blackberry bush, pickled prunes, light sweetness, salted meat, smoked bacon, rather subtle smoke (campfire / wood smoke), some glue, cigar tobacco, vanilla pods, light earthiness, pepper and spicy spices
    • Taste
      92 92
First, cigar-like smoke, some ashes, red berries and pickled raisins, dark chocolate
A second sip of smoked meat, then the forest berry
    • Finish
      93 93
very long, pleasant, warm smoke, blackberries, some wood, liquorice. Dark chocolate remains with the campfire and red berries

Fair sample: A really nice whisky.
Issue price was around 400, if I am not mistaken. Would I have gotten a bottle for that? Probably not, but still a great malt.
    • Nose
      93 93
      Full sherry nose.
      Dates, figs, raisins ... syrupy.
      Boiled strawberries and tree cakes.
The alcohol and smoke stay in the background and give it a nice depth.
    • Taste
      92 92
Here the Oloroso comes through fully.
Roasted hazelnuts, plums, a little honey and a lot of spice.
The smoke, toasted aromas are more dominant than in the nose. A creamy, oily mouthfeel.
At the second sip, bacon and men's chocolate (80%).
    • Finish
      93 93
      Long finish.
      Menthol, tobacco and furniture polish.
Becomes drier with a hint of blackberries.
      Very nice!

The first nose immediately promises "it has remained a bowmore" great! Despite the 21 years and the very intense influence of the barrel, the character of the distillery is recognizable. If you continue to smell it, you will simply be overwhelmed by the variety of flavors: “a lot of sherry, furniture polish, a little sweet mango in the background and the typical smell of Bowmore. I'm in heaven! "

It lies heavy and full on the tongue and fills the entire mouth. Despite the 51.7% ABV, the alcohol is barely noticeable and well integrated into the distillate. “Old leather and slightly sweet fruits spread on the tongue, more the tropical than the typical oranges! A couple of violets are not annoying. All water is removed from the tongue, after swallowing the black liquid, the entire mouth is covered and the tongue sticks to everything ... amazing! Sweetness, leather and some smoke remain!

Long, just long! You can taste this malt in your throat the next morning after enjoying it in the evening.

Not for connoisseurs of balanced malts and definitely not an all day dram!
Is he good? Yes, without a doubt one of the best! Is it the best? No, there is no such thing as the best!

He has everything, what one expects of a really good Bowmore (can expect?). Something like it might be again in the not so high priced segment. It's not that long ago ...
    • Nose
      93 93
Barely poured, this Bowmore urges with significantly more than a handful of raisins and dried figs in the nose. Dressed in a mild smoky note. Tobacco notes, old leather, dry, old wood. Pleasantly musty and earthy with mushrooms and the scent of withered autumn foliage (in a late autumn forest walk, sunlit). Fermented grapes with subtle and unremarkable acidity. Marzipan bread, cinnamon, coriander, mint, white pepper.
    • Taste
      92 92
Full, creamy and oily, almost creamy. Fat. Oak full, from the beginning pleasantly tart herbs. Café au lait, milk chocolate, almonds. Peppermint provides a certain freshness, where he has - as in the nose - more earthy character. The oak in combination with the herbs is already very intense, but also on the tongue encountered raisins and dried fruits remain here rather in the background.
    • Finish
      92 92
Long finish. Is becoming increasingly dry, the sweet raisins come back, oak and smoke soft, you want to sniff and taste again, oh, it would not be over yet ...

Smells of Bowmore and strong sherry, great nose. Sweet sherry in the mouth, light smoke, a bit greasy. Long strong finish, alcohol well integrated.

Good buy for 250 pounds, if you have the opportunity. The secondary market prices of 400-500 € I would not be willing to pay ...
