I expected more from a lauded release of a Local Dealer Selection bottling. The sherry is muddled and lacks impact. Only the interesting association of smoke sets this Deanston apart from just any other generic sherry cask. Too bad really. The Deanston from last year’s release was much better IMHO. There are not real off notes here, but it does not shine anywhere either.

Nose

Not very expressive at first. Faint sweetness and a cooling bite of rocket fuel ABV. Whiffs of flintiness and dried fruit emerge, but the alcohol is masking most of it. With water: more sweetness.

Taste

Juicy-sweet. Cold, faint bonfire embers? Some oxidized form of smokiness? On the palate of a 12yo Deanston? Interesting. It proceeds less curious, with oranges, chalky tannins, and herbal tea. Not all that expressive in my opinion.

Finish

Medium-short. A continuation of what was going on before. Oranges, some tannins and faint caramel.

Alcohol stings. Sweet sherry, herbs, sweet malt, pastries, a fresh note in the background. Quite spicy and a bit musty. A little bit shy ... needs warmth. But somehow set.

Taste

Violent start. Very spicy, sweet, again the pastry, a hint of ash (???), some oak.

Finish

Little meaningful. Slightly bitter, slightly sweet, quickly gone.

Color: dark amber, some red tinge

Unusual bottling. The nose is really good. Then it gets weird. In the mouth the ashes and the smoke. Where is that supposed to come from at Deanston? Is that a sulfur indication?. Probably not - strange. A little too dry and the finish also falls off. What a shame after a promising start.

Barrel aromas dominate. Wine profile, more modern, sherry, port or red wine? I type on port. Dominated by red fruits: berries, more sweet than sour, dates. A few spices, menthol, marshmallow, a fireplace? Later sandalwood. Heavy and dense, the alcohol doesn't sting, but I still suspect> 50%

Taste

Mouth: decent start, alcohol ~ 58-60%, dry, interestingly I suspect lightly peated, which was not so noticeable in the nose. The second sip gives more sweetness and a few more berries. After that the oak pushes. European oak imho. I stay with the wine barrel. Dry again. 1st fill? Even sweeter with water. Campfire, ashes.

Finish

Finish: still dry, relatively spartan for the intense aroma before. A few burnt berries with sugar.

Well, I didn't expect that now. Extremely dark, tart, spicy and more cigar malt than most who call themselves that. I especially like the finish, like smoking a pipe with a standard whisky. Class!

Nose

So that's what I call tobacco flavor. Lots of it, plus a lot of leather, with black currants. In addition, some glue and oak. Unfortunately the whole thing is a bit closed and the earthy notes are very dominant, there is almost no fruit to smell. Still, has something.

After some standing time honey.

Ps: He doesn't like thinning at all.

Strong, you notice the 60%. In the mouth now the full load of pipe tobacco (Burley). Very spicy and dark, with a very great oak taste.

with water: the nose and taste really cry out for water, which is why he gets more than just a few drops. Yes, with the water you get the alcohol under control, but unfortunately this makes the sherry very dull, the tobacco gets stronger, and the oak also becomes more dominant

Conclusion: From the data, this should be a great sherry bomb. But he does not keep what he promises, too much alcohol, poorly integrated. If you take water, it becomes dull. In my opinion, the whisky was in the barrel for too long and then took the negative rather than the positive barrel influences with it. Too bad - unless you like intense notes of tobacco.

Nose

Tobacco, cocoa, leather, the sherry also bring a little dark sweetness (black currant jelly) with it, a few minerals, plus the very dominant alcohol, some glue comes through and a very strong oak, does not look completely round

violent start with a lot of alcohol, then the sherry slowly defends itself, tobacco, leather old wood, strong oak, a little liquorice

Finish

short to medium length, in addition to the sherry of all violent and in the end also quite bitter oak notes

I really liked the tobacco notes
