Whisky Reviews for Glen Grant 1991 HL

3 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.39 points

Just like the HL13043 from 2016 also slightly smoky! Both distilled in 06.1991, so probably the same batch of barrels. Or where does the smoke come from?
Also a very good, elegant, older Glen Grant from the sherry-barrel, but the 25-year-old from 2016 is on the nose even sweeter, sherry-heavy, thicker in the mouth and is therefore in front of me in direct comparison.
But still loose 90 points from me!

Elegant sherry, minty, with fruit juices. A hint of walnuts. Pretty nice start.

Oh this is smoky! Not Laphroaig smoky, but a nice layer of smoke on top of the fruits. It's not a fruit bomb by any means, but a balanced sweetness. Also pepper and anise. Thin mouthfeel though.

Some oak showing at the end, with decent length, and with lingering pepperiness.

Definitely a sherry man, who has to offer wood notes. If you are looking for a fruity whisky from the sherry barrel, you are wrong here.

I have nothing against wood-heavy malts but somehow I'm missing something.
    • Nose
Initially short wax. The sherry is here. However, it goes in the nutty direction. Reminds me of dry hazelnut. Then a nut cake with apricots. Dark brittle. Nutmeg. Dry wood. Also always resonates with a certain cooling note. Maybe something anise.
    • Taste
First some forest honey in the mouth. Then the nutty character makes itself felt again. Burnt almonds. Trail mix. In addition, oak notes come, which can also remind of smoke. Perhaps also indicated mineral notes. From fruit is relatively little to feel.
    • Finish
Walnut. Tree bark. Toasty aromas. Tobacco.
