A musty start that immediately brings to mind the damp basement of a Scottish bed and breakfast where the resident dog has just taken a shower – wet fur, cheap shampoo, and all. Dusty, damp, almost insulting. Who on earth allowed this barrel to age so much?
    • Taste

A massive misstep. Pure soapy water, as if you'd gotten lost in the bathroom and accidentally bitten into a bar of soap. The texture: oily and dull. The taste: a mix of soap, bitters, and a hint of Grandma's old perfume bottle, which has been sitting open on the windowsill since 1983. No comfort, no depth—just horrible.
    • Finish
      10 10
Long, very long...unfortunately. The soapy impression lingers on the tongue like a film, overlaid with an aroma reminiscent of the dripping fur of a freshly showered hunting dog, rubbed with shampoo for sensitive skin. And no, that's not charming, it's just yuck.

      Conclusion:
A reminder that not every old whisky is necessarily good. The Edradour 1976 SV is an olfactory disaster in a collector's bottle.

As expected for such an old whisky, the nose is somewhat woody, but not overly so, and sweet and slightly fruity—although a hint of lavender does come through. Unfortunately, the lavender/soap notes come to the forefront on the palate and finish.

I have never had a whisky which tastes that extremely soapy like this one. When you drink it, it is like you drink pure liquid curd soap and it does not stop.

  6. SimonMalthead scored this whisky 5 points Expert Junior

Unbelievably bad. The taste of hard soap and mothballs lingered in my mouth for several hours and was present when I burped. Horrible.

  7. ImNorden scored this whisky 1 points Expert Junior

Tastes as if the saying "wash your mouth out with soap", which used to be often used as a threat after using a swear word, has now become reality

This smells and tastes like I fell into a washing machine. The best shower gel I've ever had.

    Serge's review (13-08-15):

    Edradour 24 yo 1976/2000 (51.2%, Signatory Vintage, cask #142, 320 bottles)
I have to say these ones bear a very shady reputation… Colour: pale
gold. Nose: eh? Rotting artichoke? Burnt carbon paper? Anti-rust paint?
Quick, with water: soap, fish liver oil, a pile of brown coal, new
sneakers (Nike’s very ugliest, I’d say), and then, quite appropriately,
gym socks. Hard. Mouth (neat): the other day I had thought an old indie
Glenfiddich was the soapiest whisky I had ever tasted. Well, this one’s
pretty good at that as well. Extreme lemon-flavoured soap. With water:
frankly horrible. Very soapy, with a rotten side. Those artichokes
again? Finish: quite long, with ‘better’ notes of almond oil, but the
aftertaste remains very soapy. Comments: I guess the usually excellent
Signatory Vintage just wanted to have whiskies from just any Scottish
    distillery. Including Edradour. SGP:272 - 15 points.

    I do agree!
