[October, 2018] After an uninspiring and rather lousy tour I had an even more disappointing tasting at the distillery with all four Aberlour drams being sub-standard for the first time ever. Is the traditional high Aberlour quality going south? It seems that way and because they do not offer or sell a tasting dram I had to buy this pricey distillery only (and 500 ml only) bottling of a 1st fill sherry butt to check this - a kind of maturation Aberlour was (and still is) famous for...

...and even this pricey "Reserve Collection" confirms the downward trend of the Aberlour quality. Is it cheekiness or desperation that they selected a significantly sulphur-spoiled cask as the flagship "Distillery Reserve"? A few years ago I had a chat with an Aberlour manager that proudly stated "We always checked our casks deliveries for sulphur-treatments and in doubt we rejected these casks that went to other distilleries that did not care about cask quality as much as we do". Obviously, these times are gone at Aberlour long ago because the newest a'bunadh batch #63 is sulphur-spoiled too (as were other batches before that). Another distillery that went from heaven to hell (literally) and hence falls off of my list of favourite drams, sadly...

The colour is auburn and the first mpression on the nose is "Oh no, this cannot be! The flagship Aberlour single cask bottling is spoiled with sulphurous off-notes..." I clearly smell burnt matches, matchbox ignition area and gunpowder aromas that dominate (and bury) the fine sherry flavours a little too much (meanwhile even I tolerate a minor sulphurous spoilage as so many releases own this nowadays). The sulphur grows stronger the longer the dram breathes so if you do not like the "smell of hell" drink this dram rather fast...
    • Taste
      84 84
The taste is nicely layered on fine sherry-driven flavours but unfortunately the sulphur grows stronger the longer I chew the dram. This comes along with more unpleasant bitter and "match-y" notes as if I chew the ignition area part of a matchbox. Again, if you do not like these flavours swallow the dram rather quickly...
    • Finish
      84 84
The whisky arrives warming but not really coating in the mouth with a minor bitter-astringent and scurfy mouthfeel from the sulphur-treated cask. The finish is of a medium length and gets bitter-drying with the scurfy sulphurous mouthfeel again. But there are some additional fine chocolatey notes too that soothe the sulphur pain, at least a little bit...

I can not understand the other ratings here. A really good Aberlour with individual notes. By the way, this is wanted with a single barrel, if you can't stand it you should buy the core range.

In a tasting 4 months ago, this whisky was by far the star of the evening.

Ultimately, taste is always a matter of taste ...
And after a lot of annoyance about a supposedly or actually bad tour, an objective judgment about a dram is difficult.

Yes, I agree ... right. I was there in 2017 and there was the 13y. Sherry cs 70cl for 60 pounds and a great quality .. This one tastes of soap and the sulfur is not to be surrendered. Hmmm ... they were better sometimes
