[June, 2019] Looking at all the high scores here this seems to be an excellent Lagavulin...

...and indeed, it is. But it certainly needs a fair reduction to open up, especially on the nose. By the way, this is a fine Lagavulin no doubt but I had many much better ones in the past - so the current prices of more than 1.800 bucks per bottle are just ... ridiculous. But if you own deep pockets go and get your bottle, I would not pay more than 125 Euro for a bottle of this drinking quality (but maybe I am stupid)...
    • Nose
      89 89
The colour is jonquiripe corn and the nose offers a punchy and shy profile first that obviously cries for water. Yes, water releases the aromas, finally. Now it offers a fine old-style waxy-medicinal-tarry profile that I like.
    • Taste
      90 90
The taste is nicely layered without any flaw or imbalance. This is tasty and easy quaffable, no doubt - but somehow I miss some more complex flavours that drive this taste beyond the 90 points barrier. The reduced dram gets smoother but there are no additional flavours according to my taste buds. But the drying-astringent notes vanish (mostly) at around 45% abv.
    • Finish
      90 90
The dram arrives warming and coating on the palate with a drying-astringent feeling (cold metals, cold ashes). The finish is very long and adds more peaty-ashy impressions which lead to a drying-astringent ending because of that.

Almost 57%, but so refined, some fruit and gentle smoke. Really long finish. Great!

Lagavulin 21 years, 1997/2018, Select Cask 0001 for European Lagavulin fans, 56.6%, 158 fl.

    Color: bright, brilliant amber

Nose: The nose shows fine notes of rosemary, thyme and cloves. Wrapped in soft smoke you will find freshly pressed oranges and lime peel. Very complex and complex.

Palate: In the mouth one experiences an explosion of the aromas. Tobacco, leather, cedar wood and old, dusty oak furniture. The alcohol is very well integrated and supports the fine aroma structures.

Finish: The finish is long and complex. It ranges from old wood to cane sugar and leather saddle to a salty Maritime end, always wrapped in a fine smoke structure.

Conclusion: 92/100 points - "awesome whisky". I'm not a euphoric Lagavulin fanatic, but I've had some - even older ones - in the jar, but this Lagavulin is the best I've ever had in the jar. He is complex, filigree and pleasantly oily in the mouth. Here, the "European Lagavulin fans" have opened a nice barrel. The whisky was with about € 1,300 / bottle anything but cheap, but sold out immediately - right!

Buy more? Well, this question is unnecessary, because sold out, but I find 4-digit sums for whisky one way or so borderline. However, you will find in this price range just such whisky beads.

Many thanks to Sebastian for the sample.

    Next-level whisky from a next-level distillery.
    • Nose
Somewhat vegetal, but also hints of licorice, smoked sausage and fried bacon, followed by damp old wood and subtle wood smoke. The soft citrus notes are wonderful, with zesty orange taking the crown. It even has a light floral touch. Finally, there's also a slight farminess. Lovely well-integrated and complex. Stunning!
    • Taste
A salty en pepper-y arrival, with subtle notes of charcoal and vegetal peat, as well as burlap. There's definitely smoked paprika powder in here, as well as some beef jerky and charred meat.
    • Finish
Lingering bonfire smoke with a nice salinity.
