Whisky Reviews for Glenmorangie 18-year-old

64 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.55 points

  1. StyrianSpirit scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Elegant, intentive and undoubtedly good. Personally, I miss even a little unexpected, "dirty" note or an intense-dense depth. Basically, this is a very clear, fine sherry malt.
    • Nose
Everything starts with a very nice light fruity nose. For me, a few Grappa Nuts now join us, berries and from somewhere comes the barrel; are 18 years.
    • Taste
The malt comes wonderfully oily and now sweet and dark fruity in the mouth. Plum, some cinnamon, caramel. That's what they are, the sherry casks. Everything very clearly done.
    • Finish
In the medium-long finish, the fruitiness is complemented by strong oak bittern notes. That fits.

  2. Archer scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A successful "big brother" of the Glenmorangie Original.
    • Nose
Ripe fruits are immediately noticeable: pears and green grapes fill the nose. Even after prolonged Verriechen the fruits are still amazingly active.
    • Taste
Full-bodied sweet fruit, with a distinct oak aroma. Something sherry is to be found. The grapes from the nose turn into raisins on the tongue. During the fading away again shows the 18 -year storage period in oak barrels.
    • Finish
Medium long and very complex in its reflection of the nose and the palate.

  3. KB201 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

The 18 year old Glenmorangie Extremely Rare is one of the distillery's few older bottlings. After 15 years in bourbon casks, about 30% of the malt is finished in sherry casks. Then the malts are reunited.

  4. tribe scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Relatively atypical. More wood and less sweet. Doesn't have the lightness either, but something really on the edge. Jam and wood with nuts and nougat. Getting a bit bitter.

medium sherry -> nougat -> walnut -> oak / cocoa, light spicy sharpness, rather intense, yummy, but not filigree, which makes it more with power than with elegance

  6. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Solid highlander, slightly fruity and beautiful oak notes, minimal sherry influence. However, a little alcoholic. Good, but no excitement.

Pretty nice, but for a 18-year-old with relatively little depth.

The grown up brother of the Glenmorangie 10, nicely sweet and fruity !
    • Nose
Very fruity nose loaded with sweet tropical fruits (passion fruit, pineapple, mango),dates and raisins. Furthermore walnut, caramel, popcorn and flowers
      .
    • Taste
Full bodied (for 43%) and creamy.Passion fruit again, also nectarine and yellow raisins. Futhermore vanilla, honey, white chocolate, coffee and a bit metallic.
    • Finish
Somewhat less rich: Garden herbs, woody, sour fruits (passion fruit again, citrus fruits), a bit of vanilla, a tiny bit of smoke

  13. Gearmailteach scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

A consistent development of the 10 OA
    • Nose
Intense fruity and ripe. Apples, berries, malt and lots of fudge, vanilla and honey notes. Also almond and some oak in the background
    • Taste
Oily and sweet with orange zest, honey, apricot and then again oak, some ripe berry and caramel.
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet and creamy. Honey, orange peel, coffee

A very pleasant and quaffable dram. Not complex in any way (or outstanding) but rather uncomplicated but good. It needs some time to open up and I found that adding water doesn’t do this dram any good. The dryness becomes accentuated and that runes the sweet fruity side of this dram (for me).
All in all a nice everyday sipper.
    • Nose
A fresh, sweet and fruity whisky with aromas of apple, pear, white grapes, berries (blueberries, bramble, redcurrant), subtle spices (cinnamon, allspice, ginger), hint of dried fruits (apricots, nectarines), white chocolate, grains, malt, acacia honey, vanilla, hint of walnut, tangerines and subtle oak.
    • Taste
A sweet, spiced and balanced whisky with aromas of honey, orange, black pepper, tannins, spices (cinnamon, ginger, allspice), a hint of dates, apricots, vanilla, floral tones, lemon zest, honey, caramel, hint of grapefruit, green walnut, subtle tones of ripe Mirabelle plums and oak
    • Finish
A medium, sweet and slightly drying finish with aromas of pepper, tannins, honey, hint of fennel seeds, walnut, cinnamon, cedarwood and oak.

Tried it with the "blind shot club" and guessed it to be an old Glenrothes. The age is apparent in this one. So properly matured and so delicious. For less than 100€ I would say it is really affordable.

    (Rating interval 86-89)
    • Nose
Very malty on the nose, with powdered licorice, gentle smoke, leather and salt water.
    • Taste
The arrival is fruity, with complex fruit, malt and caramelized sugar. Some sweet licorice appears on the development, with sweet red apples, black berry marmalade and gentle smoke.
    • Finish
The licorice continues into the finish with the red apples, some newly cracked black pepper, raisins, prunes, roasted coffee and the gentle smoke again.

A solid one. Really better than the Original 10yo.

Tasted at Whisky Live Paris 2015.
    • Nose
Compared to the 10, this is way more expressive, and especially less alcohol driven. Creamy vanilla from the bourbon barrels, then more fruits (oranges) and some nuts from the sherry oak. Nicely balanced.
    • Taste
Good body, good attack, on malty, honey and vanilla notes. Becomes then more sherried, with a nice bitterness and some grapfruit notes. Still some nuts found in the nose, plus maybe some figs.
    • Finish
      Maybe a tad too short.

    Aroma: beautiful fruity berries, oak, sherry marzipan, almonds, light freshness of mint, apple, is becoming increasingly strong, raspberries, violets or floral notes, herbs, sweet gushes, strawberries, something like old beer;

    Taste: Sherry, nutty, red berries, quite strong in the taste, sweet! fresh champions (yes, all mushrooms), fruity, vanilla, spicy, orange peel;

    Finish: nice and long with red fruits and dried fruits;
Conclusion: Good stuff! One can hardly guess the origin as Glenmorangie. Great to give, and be it to yourself! He is actually quite cheap for the murderous packaging, but that is a bit too pretentious to me. Without him he would be destined for 60 € and still a good whisky!

A good single malt as it should be, strong, spicy, complex. A slightly stronger flavor compared to the strong taste would still be desirable.

    Tasting Notes and Comments by Glenmorangie;

Aroma: Rich, rounded and sweet with dried fruits and a complex floral fragrance.

Taste: The taste is balanced between honey, malt and flowery scents. Dates and figs emerge in the background with a hint of wood smoke.

Finish: The finish is long and enticing with the sweetness of dried fruit and subtle dryness of Oloroso nuttiness. The 18 Years Old is a single malt Scotch whisky of serious distinction. Once it has spent fifteen years maturing in American white oak casks approximately 30% is transferred into Spanish Oloroso casks to spend a further three years maturing. Then, when both elements have reached 18 years, we blend them back together to create a whisky with a rich bouquet and full, rounded flavour. For a whisky of this age this expression has maintained, thanks to our delicate floral spirit and fine Oloroso casks, an incredible degree of vibrancy where the raisiny sweetness of the sherry has been toned down by the nuttiness of the American oak.

Absolutely good whisky, especially if the sun is out.
But no matter how extremely rare this may be, it is not extremely overwhelming.
Extremely sweet, yes. Around 70 EUR.
    • Nose
The nose is honeysweet and floral. All kinds of honey
and vanilla custard, wrapped in spring flowers. Mildly fruity on yellow plums
and yellow raisins. Sultanas, they are called. Evolves slowly but surly into
orange juice with a shot of grenadine. This is spring in your glass.
    • Taste
On the palate, too, it is sweet and somewhat creamy. A
little pepper and pinch of nutmeg offer a mild bite. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Orange and prune marmalade with quite a lot
of vanilla. Midpalate, a slightly metallic touch emerges. I am again reminded
of orange juice. Make that lemonade. Not bad, but rather docile to be honest.
    • Finish
In the medium long finish, which remains very sweet,
some drying oak rears its head.

    "Producer`s Tasting Notes

    Aroma: The cornucopia

of an autumn harvest festival table describes the overflowing abundance

of arresting aromas that tantalise at the first nose of Glenmorangie 18

Years Old. The rich, resinous quality of nuts cascades into a crisp

toffee sweetness of crème brulée, merging with caressingly smooth,

creamy vanilla. Hints of vibrant oranges & lemons are found. Crunchy

textured walnuts follow, oozing into golden honeycomb that trickles

over sun-ripened sticky dates. Then sparkling floral tones emerge,

taking the edge off any cloying sweetness, with the green, almost herbal

bouquet of geranium, tempered with musky jasmine and the bright, sharp

    clarity of narcissus.
With water, 18 Years Old reveals a rich oaken, balsamic character

that yields to soft vanilla. At this moment, the signature Glenmorangie

fruity complex reveals itself in golden apricots and dates mingled with

    hazelnuts.
Taste: Glenmorangie 18 Years Old slips like silk over the tongue with

a full, rounded flavour, starting with grapefruit & orange. The

palate is then entranced with an accord of melting honey, creamy malt

and aromatic florals that segue into the warm, syrupy nuttiness of

hazelnuts and walnuts from the Oloroso sherry casks in which the whisky

is matured. Savour the rich, sticky date and fig flavours as they are

heightened by the unexpected caress of woodsmoke.

Finish: Lingering and enticing with the subtle sweetness of dried fruit and the nutty dryness of sherry."
