A great, multi-layered nose. You can tell the origin, the rye notes harmonize well with the fruity aspects. Can no longer play at the top on the palate, but definitely pleases. Clear candidate for purchase at prices well below 50 euros.

Vanilla, slightly sour, rye spice, orange jam, cinnamon, wood. Nut chocolate, pepper, barbecue sauce, light floral notes. Some stinging alcohol

Sweetness, cinnamon, spices, vanilla, alcohol sparkles

almost medium-long finish with rye seasoning, pepper,
      Cinnamon, clove and strong alcohol

A rye whiskey that knows how to please with its complexity and powerful attack.
    • Nose
      88 88
In fact, associations with rye bread immediately come to mind. Also something fruity like rum raisins and pickled peaches. I can also discover some marzipan. Very nice, somewhat Christmassy nose.
    • Taste
      88 88
It feels heavy on the tongue and is stronger and spicier in the mouth than the fine nose would suggest. Some sharpness is also noticeable. While the fruitiness now takes a back seat, the spicy black pepper rye emerges. With the addition of water, it immediately becomes oilier and less spicy. I also notice a slight bitterness - like arugula and other spices like turmeric.
    • Finish
      87 87
The finish is rather long and hints at the aromas mentioned above. Very pleasant and quite complex.

Butter, nut, rye-specific fruity, juice and good for price

  5. KB201 scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

The 1776 Rye Barrel Proof comes in barrel strength with a strong 57.3% vol. bottled and is not, like the 1776 Rye, on drinking strength and 50.0% vol. reduced. It is produced by the James E. Pepper distillery. The name is the year of American independence and the year the distillery was founded. The 1776 Rye is committed to maintaining the traditional taste of the distillery. For this purpose, it is distilled according to old, traditional recipes. The 1776 Rye is made with a rye content of over 90%.
    • Nose
Full and aromatic nuances of chocolate, honey and cloves as well as mint. Some rye and oak.
    • Taste
A spicy, sharp note is slowly being replaced by sweet vanilla and cereals.
    • Finish
Medium long and spicy. Slightly spicy with a little ginger and pepper.

Probably a very divisive whisky, you either love it or hate it because of it's profile.
If it wasn't for it's youth, this would be 90 points material in my book. Takes water like a champ.
This juice is the 95% rye masbhill distilled by MGP, Indiana, pure and uncut. If you like Bulleit Rye, this is for you.
Let's see how long stocks last till the James E. Pepper folk actually start bottling their own distillate, which is probably going to be quite a bit different. And if it can hold up to this fairly high standard...
    • Nose
a 'green' theme allover the place, grassy, dill, parsley, lemon balm, spearmint, eucalyptus, on the other hand, very spicy as well, lots of juniper, some ginger, nutmeg as well, at the same time also sweet and a little flowery, lime blossom honey, hard candy sweetness (gobstopper), daisies, turns more vegetal after some time, gourmet paprika, freshly crushed red pepper, bay leaf, a little pungent at first, but settles down rather quickly, complex, bold and busy.
    • Taste
the arrival is sweet and green, eucalyptus honey, spearmint and dill, turns more zesty and develops a little intruiging bitterness, lemon (balm), tamarind, angostura, then sweet and vegetal and tangy all at once, ginger candy, licorice, some coconut, bay leaf, gourmet paprika, some nutmeg and juniper. It's rich and bold with a medium but oily body, a nice depth and a very good balance.
    • Finish
juniper and lemon (balm), rainbow hard candy sweetness (gobstopper), some dill, a little eucalyptus, a little nutmeg and angostura, a very pleasant and velvety coconut note as the foundation all throughout, shorter to medium.

  9. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Citrus, floral, a bit soapy, hops and orange. Saw dust, citrus sorbet ice and spices - cloves.
    • Taste
Vanilla, toasted oak, a fruity touch with fesh orange (peel) and mandarins. Syrup - grenadine and raspberries.
    • Finish
Medium drying with caramel, syrup and citrus - lemon.
