I don’t know if this is the same bottle, but according to what I could decipher from my bottle code, this one is the closest.

I could not say how much batches differ, but wow. This is the best Ardbeg I’ve had to date. Had this beside Lord of the Isles and this was the clear winner. Lord of the Isles may have been oxidized, I can’t say for sure, but it was not impressive at all. This however was damn near perfection. Top shelf stuff.
    • Nose
Tarry ropes and s’mores. Toasted marshmallow, milk chocolate and graham cracker. Nice inky smoke. Abv is not only not a problem, it is perfect the way it is. Waves of flavour, elegant and no flaws whatsoever. This is shows the power of a true small batch, where all the flaws are ironed out.
    • Taste
Very rich, great full mouthfeel, damn near perfection. Toasted marshmallow, creamy, graham cracker, and milk chocolate. Inky smoke and tarry ropes. I can’t imagine someone not liking this.
    • Finish
Creamy milk chocolate smoke without a single flaw or imperfection. Perfect tar, marshmallow, s’mores, clean and elegant. Loads of flavour and abv is perfect. No flaws!

Nose: Yes ... fruity-smoky-sparkly-maritime - Islay! Earthy peaty aromas with wet leather, humus soil and foliage. In addition orange liqueur and dark "sweet" notes of tar, coal, tobacco, humidor and campfire. Absolutely harmonious, dark, fresh and tasty. After some time in the glass, a delicately sweet vanilla note develops, and more intense fruit aromas are added.
Taste: Fat, round start with everything you would expect from old Ardbeg: peat, smoke, red and dark fruits with a fantastic salty spice. Fresh with mint and eucalyptus, but also creamy with chocolate, pudding, cream, caramel, vanilla ... and then again earth, tobacco, leather, coal, wet cardboard. What a great taste !!
Finish: Long - creamy dark chocolate, cocoa, peat, mocha, tobacco, wet cardboard and ashes. The smoke from a blazing bonfire and again soft notes of cream pudding with tons of peat.
Comment: What part of whisky history in drinking strength - almost perfect. Too bad that there are so many different bottlings of this vintage 1977, which unfortunately do not come close to this masterpiece.

Beautiful old Ardbeg. Very good and delicious, but I would have hoped for more ...

Immediately the classic Ardbeg aromas are present: ashes, iodine, salted lemons and a little camphor in the background. Almonds, pickaxe, cotton candy.
    • Taste
      92 92
Silky, sweetish, almost subtle approach. Warm aromas. Then toffee, jute bag of iodine, salt citrons, peach, fine smoke, ginger. Will be fuller and more aromatic, very balanced. Compact.
    • Finish
      90 90
Dry, surprisingly fruity, the aroma continues. Develops towards the ashen and smoky aromas (smoked meat).

There is nothing wrong with this whisky and it is easy to drink but in truth there is not much to the profile and I found it a little boring.
Worth £50-£75 for sure in my book (as a drinker), but over £400 at auction you must be joking.
    • Nose
Nose - Tar, sweaty socks, liqourice, mellon, smoked cheese.
    • Taste
Weak for 46% but it is creamy and quite refined. Peat is evident and I still get the smoked cheese with some ham.
    • Finish
Finish - Quite long and peaty.
