Despite all the experiments, Mackmyra often knows what you get, that is a lot of fruit. This is not so pronounced in this whisky, but the sherry and ex-peated barrels ensure. But that's what makes the whisky wonderfully tasty and the best Mackmyra I've had in my glass until now.
    • Nose
      82 82
As with Mackmyra, the nose is very fruity. The aroma starts with light fruits, eg apple, but changes after a short time in the direction of cherry and blood orange. Slight sherry flavors, some oak spice and very little smoke resonate in the background.
With some time chocolate and caramel are added.
    • Taste
      85 85
The taste has a slightly oily consistency and begins with the dark fruit flavors of the nose: blood orange and dark chocolate. It is joined by spicy and grassy notes, such as lovage, cilantro and moss. There is also a slight acidity.
    • Finish
      75 75
The finish is medium long and remains mainly in the mouth. Beautiful notes of chili chocolate, the spicy notes already mentioned in the taste and some citrus fruit dominate the finish.

A very complex and quite interesting bottling that lives from the beautiful distillate of ''Mackmyra'' in combination with the diverse barrel types. For my taste there is a bit too much fresh oak involved, which is probably due to the high proportion of very small 30 liter barrels. This means that the fruitiness is a little lacking, especially in the not so lasting finish. But even so, it's another malt from this exciting Swedish distillery that I really like.
    • Nose
Ripe apples and pears, rich malt carries the subtle scent of beer-yeast youth, grassy barley follows, a few cocktail cherries and light grapes, drier aromas of light rolling tobacco and green tea are also present, a little vanilla, the basic structure is an attractively multi-layered wood mixture consisting of decent oak spice paired with the sweet tree resin of a green birch branch, a hint of apricot dumplings and sand cake adds a fine pastry note in the background, traces of chopped savory and young cress increase the complexity
    • Taste
Initially sweet and sour fruits, grapes and sour cherries, apples and pears, the oak accompanies the youthful barley malt with resinous and spicy accents, cooling birch sugar, vanilla, apricots stop by, shortbread with candied ginger, also a pinch of crushed juniper berries and ground caraway, fresh chopped kitchen herbs bring a subtle pepperiness, savory
    • Finish
Rather short, dry wooden boards and sweetish tree sap, ice confectionery introduces a briefly cooling eucalyptus freshness, gently malty finishes, interspersed with grassy spots of young barley, sandy ''Williams'' pear leaves a few remains of peel and casts the shadow of an apricot

Blind, I wouldn’t be able to guess there was such a complicated cask composition to this whisky. It is quite balanced, with no flavour or trait overpowering the others, but I think it’s lacking a bit of texture on the palate, and maybe a couple more years under its belt.
    • Nose
      84 84
It starts with a bit of varnish, vanilla and honey, toffee and fudge, then moves to fruits, with mostly apples and apricots and lots of cherries almost cherry liqueur. Some sweet spices as well.
    • Taste
      84 84
Sweet arrival, but the mouthfeel is a little thin, more than I’d expect at 46.1% ABV. Then it becomes a bit woody, with also coffee beans, honey, pepper, nutmeg and clove. Whisky flavoured fudge (I know that I’m tasting a whisky, but it really feels like a whisky flavoured fudge. And those are my tasting notes anyway, I write what I want.), and something herbal. Tobacco leaves and moss I’d say. Apricot and pear for the fruity side.
    • Finish
      82 82
Short to medium, with pear and apricots, nuts and clove.

    • Nose
      83 83
Young, yes, with varnish / paint thinner and a perfumy eau-de-vie note. Then there are sour berries, a hint of sherry, and warm wood. However, while you can smell the alcohol, you can't feel it: there's no sharpness or bite. The intense maturation in smaller casks has efficiently sanded down the edges. Pleasant, lively, and bright.
    • Taste
      80 80
The sherried components are undeniable on the palate, along with a lot of oak. The flavors revolve around tangerine, banana, honey, and caramel.
    • Finish
      76 76
Slightly tannic and drying due to the intense oak influence. As is often the case with young whiskies, what's lingers the longest is a feeling of alcoholic heat.

After a good experience with the 10 y.o., Gruvguld is my second taste from Mackmyra and, again, it confirms the very good impression of the Swedish distillery.
Aged in a large variety of small casks, including bourbon and sherry, this malt is fruity, powerful and – of course – full of distinctive oaky notes. After an immediate rich fruity bouquet, it displays a more complex and slightly oily mouthfeel with dark chocolate, a touch of spice and even some distant echoes of smoke.
Far from being sweet despite the clear influence of the sherry casks, it’s an elegant and balanced whisky, with a intense flavour, lingering in a warm and somehow odd finish, with surprising nuts and dried fruits notes even comparable to a good Spanish brandy.
Two clues are enough of a proof of the good work at Mackmyra and leave me curious to discover more of its wide and quite peculiar range.

From Mackmyra’s website: ‘Mackmyra Gruvguld (Gold from the mine) has been aged in small casks of 30, 100 and 128 litres, in the mine of Bodås‘.

N: Quince jelly and mint sauce, meaty peachy orchard & sweetened citrus fruits, pastries, earth to putty – a putty mashy note which remains consistent amongst the range.

T: Short arrival which soon drops in intensity to simple barley sugar and settles at the front of the palate [Wayne].

F: Settles and simmers with a little Refreshers [Charlie] fizziness and a peppery waxiness. A rather dry puckering finish concludes with more barley sugar.

C: Odd form. I’m not totally convinced but I keep sipping away regardless.

    official description:

Mackmyra Gruvguld (gold from the mine) matured exclusively in small barrels of 30, 100 and 128 liters in the Bodås mine, 50 meters underground.
This whisky pays homage to our powerful 30 liter barrels that have been with us since the beginning of Mackmyra. Over 50% of this single malt matured in such small barrels of different oak types and different finishes.

The new make that matured for this single malt consists mainly of our elegant recipe with the exception of a few barrels that were filled with our smoky recipe, which provide a little extra spice.
Among the many different barrels there is also a good handful, in which Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry were previously stored.

Nose: Spicy with berries, fruits and slightly oily notes. Toasted notes of vanilla, oak and caramel fudge. A light, warm and woody spice with a hint of tar and minerality. Sweet notes of raisins, marzipan, citrus and pear. Notes of black currant and older whisky are found, along with spicy and herbal notes of anise, ginger and tobacco leaves.

Taste: Spicy with a nice balance between fruits, berries, oils and oak. Black currant, pear fudge and grapefruit. Pleasant wood flavor with a hint of tar and tobacco leaves. The texture has a slight oiliness.

Finish: Oily and spicy with berries and a slight dryness towards the end.

    casks:
    Bourbon: 30 L - 100 L 1st fill / 2nd fill
    Swedish oak: 30 L - 100 L
    Virgin / 1st fill / 2nd fill
    Oloroso: 30 L
    Virgin / 1st fill Swedish oak + Bourbon: 30 L
Virgin / 2nd fill / saturated with PX
    New American oak: 128 L
Virgin / 1st fill / saturated with Oloroso

It is quite an interesting, clearly fruity whisky, which maybe could bring a little more bite.
    • Nose
      86 86
It starts off woody and with a slight touch of solvent. Then hazelnuts. Then banana, citrus and lemon curd. Toasted bread, vanilla and some chocolate appear.
    • Taste
      84 84
Fruity and spicy beginning, the banana is back. Black tea, malt. Alcohol well integrated.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish has lemon balm, light woody bitterness and some spice.

You can always find the "fruitiness" of the orignal spirit in the whisky. This one is one of my favorit's. fruit, sherry...

      ,of honey
    • Taste
      floral and spicy sensation, vanilla,
the fruits are more indented, the spices crushing a little, it looks young, a little rough
      back toasted, a little woody
      vanilla again
    • Finish
short, too fast, lacking relief, disappointment with the nose

the taste is a bit "hard in the mouth" but then there is a refined taste experience. The whisky is complex, take the time to give the taste experience time. The viscosity does the taste very good, then tastes like apricot, sweet pineapple. Very special.

  16. LDB scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Not uninteresting, the flavors, but the whole thing is not really complex.

I did not strike a gold mine ....
    • Nose
      83 83
Ahoy woodruff shower, a touch of honey and elderflower, baked apple with a pinch of gunpowder
    • Taste
      84 84
At first mild and soft, white gummy bears, green pepper, redcurrants, wine from sour cherries.
    • Finish
      80 80
At first harmonious, but then something metallic-acidic, here hits the common NAS troll

Really very generous nose with fruits, flowers, Cleopatra glue, very explosive! We find these aromas in the mouth with in addition a note of lemon. it lacks a little bit of spice in the mouth but it finally develops in the final in a very interesting way!

    Enthusiasm
    Nose & finish 5/5

    Gold Mine

Gruvguld is Swedish for ‘gold from the mine’, which is of course a reference to the Bodas mine in which Mackmyra matures here whisky – at a depth of 50 meters, by the way. It is a marriage of 3 types of casks: 30 liter, 100 liter and 128 liter. While most of the whisky is unpeated, a few peated casks were added as well as a few casks that previously held oloroso and PX sherry. But the majority of this release is unpeated whisky that matured on the small 30 liter casks.

Sweet summery nose on blood oranges, toffee, chestnut with some coriander and vanilla. A hint of sniffing tobacco and some candied sugar. Mocha and dried apricots. Very accessibly, fairly straightforward but very inviting nonetheless.

Fairly piquant on the palate. Loads of allspice, ginger and liquorice, coriander and something that reminds me of juniper berries. Soft smokiness. The fruit translates mostly into blueberries, pears, blood oranges and apricots. A lot feistier than the nose promised.

The medium long finish is spicy warm.

My 20th Mackmyra. Around 50 EUR, which is a bargain in my book. Recommended.

This is a good whisky with a good story! Gruvguld means "gold from the mine". This whisky was actually matured in a mine, so the name fits perfectly. Moreover, it's an hommage to the small 30 l casks that have been used since the start of Mackmyra distillery. This whisky matured in:
    - first- en second fill bourbon casks of 30 en 100 litre,
    - new, first- and second fill Swedish oak casks of 30 en 100 litre,
    - first-fill oloroso casks of 30 liter, Swedish oak and bourbon casks of 30 litre (new, first-fill, second fill and soaked Pedro Ximénez), and
    - American oak casks of 128 litre (new, first-fill and soaked oloroso).

I also heard that some ex-peated casks were used.
This remarkable combination leads to a great balance. It's never dominated by any of the casks, nor is the effect of the wood present in a dominating way. It leads to a slightly savoury, fruity, spicy and earthy whisky. The start of the finish is just a bit too acidic to my taste, but I may be splitting hairs here.
    • Nose
      86 86
Appearance: old gold, towards amber. Rather thick and slow legs.
The nose is quite complex: fruity, bready, leafy and spicy. There is toast with salted butter, autum leaf, moss, cinnamon, peach and lemon.
    • Taste
      86 86
Good balance between sweet, dry and sour. It's a bit earthier than on the nose, with tobacco, and saldy moss coming the fore. Then there is allspice, date, peach and toffee.
    • Finish
      84 84
The finish is moderately long, first a bit acidic and later leaving some more pleasant earthy notes. The kick of lemon zest in the beginning is a bit overpowering.
