I visited all distilleries in Scotland (most of them several times over the last 20 years) but the one I have searched for the longest time was Mannochmore (this was before the Internet and navigation systems were available).  More than three times I drove the road where it supposed to be and than I stopped frustrated at Glenlossie distillery to ask for direction.  The guy laughed loudely and pointed to a building two blocks behind Glenlossie on the same property.  "There is Mannochmore."  At this time it was not producing as the whisky boom had not started yet.  All doors were locked, the stills unpolished and the windows not cleaned for years.

Mannochmore is infamous for its heavily critised "Loch Dhu" experiment and still today there are not many really good releases available.  It was (and probably will ever be) a workhorse for Diageos blends.  This dram certainly is one of the better Mannochmore, but still not really convincing.  After some nice sherry aromas in the nose there is a rather hot arrival in the mouth followed by some quiet wooden/bitter notes that I did not expect in a 18 year old.  The finish is not very long and again slightly drying out.  Water improves it somewhat but the bitter notes increase almost the same way as the pleasant ones do.

Come on, Diageo, you can do better than that....

Great whisky! Good example of how sherried maturation should be made

wow..what a dram. I only had one mannochmore before this and I just cannot remember it, would not write notes then.
I simply find this a brilliant bottle.
    • Nose
elegant sherry profile with dried fruits (sultanas, dates) and lots of leather and tobacco aromas.
let it rest for a while and it rewards you with tinned pineapple, mango, peaches and oranges. the leather and tobacco slowly vanishes. the sherry fruit gets into the background and the bourbon fruits win the match. with water: the dried fruits are back. very funny development.
    • Taste
love this! really very good. wonderful harmony between the dried and the fresh fruits.
the dried fruits are really back in the game, juicy to creamy mouthfeel. caramel and  a little oak. a bit peppery too.
with water: ahh, even better. add some eucalyptus,
high quality toffee, marzipan and milk chocolate
    • Finish
      long, very balanced
