Another great Speysider from 1973 - looks like the warehouses have endless reserves...
    • Nose
Intense, exotic fruit salad, sweetest honeydew, pineapple, thai mango, passion fruit, apricots, peaches, hints of vanilla too - fantastic!
    • Taste
Oily, creamy, truck loads of fruits again, very fine wood notes, subtle sweetness - excellent!
    • Finish
Medium long, more spices, pepper, nutmeg

  2. Allandale scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

Thank God I have a bottle.
    • Nose
Oaky. Hints of ginger. Fruit all about fruit. Fresh orange peel, lemon ,apricots, hint of grapefruit. Parts of honey, sweet and complex.
    • Taste
Littlebit oily. Fish fruit again: grapefruit, lemon peel, pineapple. But spicy and herbal too. Cardamom, some white pepper in the end?
    • Finish
Soft medium to long, with a lot of fruit and some spices. Lovely aftertaste. Very complex.

  3. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

93 points. Excellent job by Archives again.
    • Nose
Apricot, pear, peach, pineapples, toasted coconuts, fresh coconuts, very sharp, very crystalline
    • Taste
Wow! Very, very nice. In contrast to the sharp, crystalline nose, the taste is soft and creamy. Vanilla ice cream, coconut pudding, marshmallow. Lots of fruits, of course, but flavors are not as sharp like ones in 1973 TWA/3 Rivers Art Nouveau Ladies 52.4%.
    • Finish
Good oak at the end. Lots of coconuts in this one.

a true 73 and yet different - Mancarella and acla 43/44, which I had last, had significantly more fruity acidity in the nose - the fruit cocktail was fresher and more versatile. In return, I find this especially on the palate very fruity and every sip is a small roller coaster ride on the different levels of acidity and aromas -that makes it very exciting. I like the nose very much - it's just different - very sweet with beautiful spices and fruit in balance - closer to the 2017 WF Duck.
    • Nose
Sweet old supple oak with a very intense vanilla content, yoghurt with dried pineapple and sinfully a lot of chestnut honey, delicate very well interwoven very finely matured citrus notes that flow smoothly into teenagers, low acidity, dried dates, mango, banana chips with coconut fat as release agent subtle, subtle minty notes combine with sweetish spices such as cinnamon, licorice, nutmeg and a touch of star anise. The longer the glass and the more hand-warm it becomes, the more fruity acidity it releases, sweetish, resinous and spicy. The nose is full, dense, incredibly enticingly sweet and has a viscosity - that it never breaks, no matter how deep you breathe out of the Snifter - you can inhale deeply and you do not have to worry about overstraining other fillyiders' delicate nose that breaks the aroma flow. The nose overall is very oily enough for a sherry barrel, buttery (without the butter flavors)
    • Taste
sweet and very fruity, it comes to the tip of the tongue, surprisingly sour fruity it runs over the tongue, gives vanilla, coconut cream, anise, some wax and very light elegant oak, pineapple, mango apple, lemon, banana chips - he is getting sweeter, the acid fades completely - mint, rosemary sharpness, and very creamy, delicate woody aromas, with the second sip of fresh pineapple with lemon zest - the citrus oil tingles on the tongue tip, the mouth warms
    • Finish
Balsam oaks, sweet fennel, some anise, wax, gentle pineapple, sweet aryuvedic tea, cinnamon, cardamom, a hint of chocolate with red pepper and mint

I stick a solid 94 without remorse. It's VT lot 65 squared this thing!
    • Nose
Oh that's good, and it rocks hard! a mixture of fruits and malt. Blindly I would have said pastry chef, but the comments already written make me look for the melon. I also feel some packets of candy Haribo (a mix between strawberry and banana). Is not it all that much for a 44 year old malt?
    • Taste
The mouth is perfect, it's lively, everything on the fruit; It has to be chewed for a long time because it can be discovered in phases, and not a fart of woody bitterness primer to report. I also smell coconut, coconut milk to be exact.
It seems very fresh for his age, the was given what was needed without ever taking over.
    • Finish
The final is not bad at all, between medium and long. It persists in the mouth something vanilla. I may be the distorted palace because I made a duo Roquefort / Sauternes at the table, I can tell you that my taste buds make the trip better.

Oh boy, this is very good, fruity, complex, and balanced. The oak is perfect and gives it a little bite like a fresh crisp apple. A mouthwatering whisky. Of the 1973s and 1975s I've had so far this one takes the prize.

    Sooo good.
    • Nose
      93 93
Shortly a smooth maltiness that reminds me of a Belgian tripel. Then lots of pureed banana. Apricot, cantaloupe melon, coconut and tangerine. Very very fruity. Honey and vanilla pudding as well, with an edge of spice (star anise).
    • Taste
      92 92
More spicy than expected. Not hot spicy, but 'pepernoten' spices (somewhat comparable to gingerbread). Orange zest and a lot of that (over)ripe banana. Fresh fig, plum, coconut and chocolate.
    • Finish
      92 92
Banana, tangerine, vanilla, coconut and wood.

  8. wheatfield scored this whisky 93 points Expert Junior

Medium gold. Nose is fruit-forward with tinned pineapples and peaches, green apple, then menthol, other herbal notes. Front palate is sharp and biting with more herbs and fresh butter. Fruits come on with more stone fruit, some other odd tropical fruits. Nice green apple and cloves emerge. Sharp. Medium to thick palate. Doesn't lack in power as the finish shines with more fruits and a strong spirity kick. Nice stuff, gets better after a couple pours.

    Highly enjoyable, fruity, complex whisky.
    • Nose
A sliver oak, and also some fresh ginger. But let's not kid ourselves, this is all about the fruit. Lots of fresh orange peel, pickled lemon, apricots, and a hint of grapefruit. There's an attractive layer of beeswax and honey, as well as some furniture polish and a wee bit of sweet porridge.
    • Taste
Quite oily. Some bitter grapefruit, and lemon peel too, as well as tinned pineapple. Somewhat herbaceous (fennel), and a pinch of white pepper and cardamom. A touch of wood, sitting right on the edge of being too woody. Finally some menthol.
    • Finish
Medium to long, with tropical fruit and some wood spices.

  13. pilgrim77 scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Oaky notes dominate the nose, before rich and fruity notes emerge. Plenty of orchard fruits as well as some tropical varieties (mango) and a hint of coconut. Remarkably, it’s also still fresh and vibrant. Wonderful! More straightforward on the palate, with oaky notes making it quite drying. Some sweet fruits and hard-boiled sweets (sherbet lemons) also linger, keeping things exciting. Relatively short and oaky finish. A little bit of liquid history...lovely stuff.

Had an Archives Sea Star Speyside Region 1973 head-to-head tasting at WTF 2019. (WB98344 vs WB104609)

both really stunning whiskies, but if I had to choose, this one is just a bit more brilliant!

also my #1550 rating at whiskybase!

spicy fruits, full nose with deliciousness. red fruits, mango, papaya, delicate with lots of chocolate stuffs!
    • Taste

elegant, chocolate, orange peel, tangerines, red fruits on a well woven body with wooden undertones.
    • Finish
      91 91
medium long, but nicely layered, slightly drying with orange peels.

This old Speysider from the 70s is again simply delicious and elegant. Always a pleasure to try such malts.
    • Nose
Banana milk with vanilla sugar and cinnamon. Shortbread. Persimmon. Yellow kiwi. Apricots glazed in butter. Pineapple. Orange blossom honey. Glazed ginger. Coconut milk. A mixture of dry and juicy wood.
    • Taste
Nice mix of fruit sweetness and acidity. The acidity just adds a little more tension, as it provides an opposite pole to the distinct sweetness. Passion fruit and mango. Pitaya. Star fruit. Some lemon fizzy sticks. A little wax. There is a certain sharpness of ginger. Tree sap.
    • Finish
The sharpness sounds nice. Coconut meat. Rose water. Waxed pear skin. Almost no bitterness, but it gets drier.

    (blind)
    • Nose
Immediately after pouring caramel in the nose, apples and honey are added. Subtle malty, slight off-notes of a mineral nature, could also be a touch of peat. And cinnamon! Jo now I have Big Red in my nose: biggrin: In addition to the apples, there are also sweet and sour light / yellow fruits in the direction of quince, apricot,
    • Taste
Lays oily in the mouth. First the minerally peaty with a bit of peppery start, then becoming sweeter with caramel and only subtle fruitiness, then more spicy with herbs and the cinnamon I can't get rid of completely.
    • Finish
Slightly tart, becoming drier in the finish, it remains herbaceous and sweet for a while.

    Color: Rich Gold

Nose: Yeah, pretty lovely stuff. Fruit and honey, mellowed and concentrated with great age. I wouldn't call it a fruit bomb, because it's subtle rather than in-your-face. However, it's definitely "that" profile, which so often produces huge scores from connoisseurs. (The late-'80s and early-'90s Irish single malts do the same thing, pretty much.) There's a lovely waxiness present, as well. Yes, I really like this. A few drops of water don't do much here, but they don't need to, honestly.

Taste: I'm going to have to be careful here, because the damned cork broke when I first opened the bottle (it was as if the thing had been glued in there) and there are little cork bits floating about. I suppose I could have just used a sieve to pour, but whatever! Okay, here we go... There's the fruit! Big, big fruit. The mouthfeel is fine, especially given the style, but it's hardly thick or oily. It's bottled at near 50% strength, so there's a bit of bite, but it's perfectly pleasant to drink neat. I think water may do some lovely things here, though. Let's see. Yup, a few drops take out the bite and just leave the lovely fruits. That's my approach for this from here on out.

Finish: Subtle, you get some of the wood here. Water doesn't help there.

Comments: Being honest, I don't go as crazy as many for this style. I'm not saying everything needs to be bold and in your face. In fact, I think I have the biggest soft spot for big, funky flavors that don't rely upon sherry or peat primarily. Regardless, I can't help but appreciate what's going on here. The nose and palate, but especially the nose, really deliver a quality experience with beeswax/honey and fresh fruit. To have it be this vibrant after 44 years is really something. A pleasure and a bargain.

    • Nose
Sweet vanilla, marshmallow, a little hint of coconut, Lilly flower, apricot yoghurt, candy sweets and lemon peel.
    • Taste
Very smooth for it's alcohol strength. The fruit flows like a waterfall, orange, lemon, apricot, grapefruit etc.and ends up in a whirlpool. There is also some sherbet and nougat.
    • Finish
A medium fruity finish, very satisfying and refreshing.
