0142-William Peel Blended Scotch Whiskey Double Maturation 40%.
...what's there to summarize? First of all, it's best to drink with other ingredients; secondly, if you've bought it, remember that it's a one-time purchase; thirdly, if you already know what goes with what and why, buy something else. I've read that this version of WILLIAM PEEL DOUBLE MATURATION is much more complex than the basic "yellow" one. Now I know: avoid both.
...or maybe I'm wrong, maybe there are/will be supporters of WPDM? After all, the French - apparently - drink it?
    • Nose
.....almost nothing, you have to look hard for it, slightly sweet, something like an ersatz fruit juice, something that pretends to be juice but unfortunately isn't. A young wine, a little tart. Then, like a honey jar poured over with water, supposedly sweet with a honey aroma, but terribly watered down. Somewhere far in the background, a stale jar of sauerkraut. You have to try hard and have a lot of determination to reach deep enough into the tasting glass with your nose to smell anything. Straight and flat like desert roads.
    • Taste
...a bit oily, a typical grain sweetness underpinned by a rather strong, bitter coffee, and rather grainy at that, a tartness in the throat—a bit of a "bite" from the inside, bitter almonds. Second sip—oily again, making it seem "warm," but then a peppery spiciness with a hint of paprika. It's not very pleasant. Is there any fruit? Well, maybe there is, but I can't taste it.
    • Finish
...burning, peppery, oily, leaves a bitter aftertaste

Wonderful blend. Quite drinkable, better than the basic one. Regular, vanilla, honey, malt, oak, fruit. Not very alcoholic.

    A terrible, noseless thing.

Let’s just get to it. I love trying blends. You never know what you might stumble upon. Sometimes though it’s just a slog through dire things you’d rather forget.

On the nose it’s almost a nonentity. You have to literally get your nose into the glass before it offers up anything. And when it does it’s pretty merge. Glue like solvents and caramel are dominant. A bit of feint orange oil, dairy toffee and a slightly sour note. It’s just not great. Even with lengthy nosing it remains as silent as the grave.

In the mouth it’s just as grim. Caramel, grain sweetness, a little orange and white pepper, a red apple note. It reminds me of Whyte & Mackay’s bog standard Blended Scotch Whisky but less good. Less good, Jesus that’s something I thought I’d never write. To be completely fair it doesn’t actually taste terrible, it’s not like drinking something offensive, it’s just that it’s like drinking something that’s not worth the effort.

The finish is shorter than Ronnie Corbet. There’s just nothing there. It finishes abruptly and really focusses the attention to how watery the whole dram feels in the mouth. It may be 40% but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t feel more like 35%.

Nothing you could add to this would ever be greater than the sum of its parts. Put it with cola and you’ll wish you’d had that coke with just ice. It actually makes you wonder why they’ve gone to the effort of making something so insipid.

I’m not sure what the options are at this low watermark end of the market but I’m sure that with a bit of looking there’s better things to imbibe than this.
