  1. Calmar scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Quite a simple and uncomplicated whisky, slightly sloppy, but overall well balanced and smooth.
    • Nose
      Restrained, moist, woody notes and dried fruits, sharp mineral tones - chalk, plaster, a little welding aerosol; fruit shades, wood dust, carpentry, thinner;
    • Taste
      Soft, calm, oak, sweet fruity and creamy tones, caustic mineral tones, radish, ginger, fudge, boiled condensed milk, milk chocolate;
    • Finish
Spicy, refreshing, oak, leather goods, light mineral tones, dried fruits, toffees, milk chocolate.

a good sherry release in this series.
    • Nose
      87 87
Rich, like a concentrated smell of all possible sherry tones: prunes, a little dry rose cakes, a little spices, a little dried apricot.
    • Taste
      87 87
Sweet, bright, slightly oaky taste. Very sweet plum jam, a little hot pepper.
    • Finish
      85 85
Sweet slightly spicy aftertaste, with water, and with tones of dried fruits.

It is very stranges, as it is sulphury at times, and sometimes not. Definitely a great example of changing in the bottle over time as the fill level gets lower and lover.

I echo hs305's remarks exactly really apart from the sulphur (I am not so sensitive to it and am a sucker for meaty/leathery sulphur out of the stills like in longrow)
Otherwise this is a vastly unimpressive modern sherry whisky. Plain and boring. Not "limited" in any sense of the word with 250,000 bottles

[June, 2019] So far I did not like the Macallan releases of the last years (I had too many excellent old Macallan before that all played in the Malt Champions League) but I keep on trying...

...and this is another blank. It is slightly spoiled with sulphur but even without the devil's ingredient this dram is completely unimpressive. It owns a simple modern sherry profile without any interesting flavours (to my taste buds only) that I call sub-standard even when compared to other modern style sherried drams. To be honest, I would not buy a bottle regardless of how low the price is (why should I drink something I do not enjoy?)...

By the way, what a great joke: A limited release of 250.000 (!) bottles - this is more than the annual output of smaller distilleries. Do they really think customers are THAT stupid? Macallan degraded to an ordinary mass product (sold at luxury prices)...
    • Nose
      78 78
The colour is deep gold and the nose offers a minor sulphurous modern sherry profile without any interesting aromas to detect. This is a sub-standard nose - most other modern sherried whiskies provide a much better nosing experience, not to mention the old stuff. This is not even a shadow of the old Macallan nose...
    • Taste
      80 80
The taste is about the same - modern unimpressive sherry with bitter wooden notes. The only interesting flavour is the sulphur - provided you like it (I do not!). Luckily the sulphur is not that strong so the sherry and malt shines through but both do not offer a tasty profile, this is pretty ordinary stuff - like all the other recent Macallan releases I tried over the last years.
    • Finish
      75 75
The initial mouthfeel is warming and sulphurous-coating (so I do not like it because of the scurfy impressions) with a minor bitter-astringent moment. The finish is long but this is just because of the sulphur - the sherry and malt vanishes quickly. Water releases stronger sulphurous aromas in the nose and flattens the anyhow unimpressive taste. I do not like this dram neither neat nor reduced.

    A very nice, creamy whisky.
    • Nose
      Colour:
      Bright amber

      Nose:
When pouring a neat, fruity cloud came out of the glass. After panning, the nose is completely different. A set, oily aroma comes first. Also, I find leather and a trace of salt. Leather fat and a sourish fruit. Warm plum jam and something like orange syrup. Grapes, blueberries and sour cherries. With some time in the glass, the sourish fruit note becomes stronger. There is also some marzipan
    • Taste
Soft, slightly rough onset. Then immediately spicy with herbs. Has something of herbal oil. Then a bit rusty dust and so has a slight metallic taste after a bit of blood. The second sip makes the colleague a bit dustier and more mineral. The fruit note is now more in the bright direction. More lime and also in the taste the marzipan with dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Medium to long. First, really spicy. Then a very nice honey sweetness builds up.

For me, another disappointment from the house of Macallan. Not that the whisky is bad, but I would always prefer the good old Mac12 SO. These modern experiments at Macallan (NAS, umpteen barrel ages, 1824 series, etc. & tralala) have no soul.
    • Nose
      86 86
rich, heavy sherry, dark berries, cinnamon, star anise, cloves (?)
    • Taste
      82 82
undefinable sharp, unrundered onset, after some time bright pomaceous fruit (apples, pear, quince) and also a slightly exotic fruit component (could be apricot) appears tender, the peppery-sweet-looking sharpness persists, however, persistently
    • Finish
      83 83
medium-length, sherrylastiger finish, but not remembered

Rather ordinary sherried whisky without anything to pay attention at. Overall balanced and quite pleasant whisky but kind of boring. I didn’t like the sulfur note but it’s so subtle that it doesn't spoil the nose anyhow. Would be nice to have a full bottle but it seems to be sold out in most places.
    • Nose
Slightly spirituous, buttery, fruity (apricot), mixed berries with light sourness, citrus honey notes, burnt caramel, golden raisins, subtle sulfur note, some oak. Water opens sherry notes and amplifies sulfur.
    • Taste
Medium-sweet, peppery, vanilla pie, barley notes, orange zest, oak.
    • Finish
Medium-long, mouthwatering, sweet, with malty and sherry notes, somewhat grassy, tad nutty, light oaky notes at the end.

    • Nose
At first, discreet, closed, gradually opening up, complex. Vanilla notes, dried apples, burlap, ascorbic acid, barely noticeable sulfur notes, freshly sawed board, perfume shades, flour, wine notes, caramel, creamy toffee, broken branch, candy drops, cotton candy. 23
    • Taste
Medium dry, somewhat alcoholic. Ascorbic acid, pepper, oak shades, orange peel, lemon peel, tannic bitterness, salt, creamy toffee, red apple. 21
    • Finish
From medium to long, tannic, bitter, fading smoothly. 22
Good whisky, excellent nose, but bitterness in taste and finish could be smaller. Balance 21.

Worst of the Edition Series so far. Very hot on the palate and finish, not overly complex and lacking balance.
    • Nose
Bourbon spices, lemony with cloves with a hint of sweetness. It's subtle and with time the more traditional Macallan sherry notes come through.
    • Taste
Lots of spice, WOW it is hot! Bitter oak, sharp and fairly unpleasant, some hints of orange but lacks balance.
    • Finish
Lots of spice, tongue has burning sensations. Lots of spice and oak with not a lot else.

  25. Achany scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

sweet, some ginger and cinamon, hints of leather, and sweet again, heather, some honey, some vanilla, some yellow fruits. takes time to develop, oak kicks in, parfume sweetness is what came to mind. interesting malt, finish could be a bit longer for a Macallan but still very nice dram!

The nose was in fact more beautiful than the taste it could hold, too bitter for me, especially in the finish.
    • Nose
Lovage, nougat chocolate, hazelnut, bitter orange, grapefruit, leather, chest of drawers, also a few citrus notes, cinnamon, nutmeg, apricots out the back, a hint of toasted bread
    • Taste
Toffee, heather honey, lovage, nougat chocolate, grapefruit and leather, dusty dresser, thyme, brown, lightly burnt sugar, dark malt, wild garlic and nutmeg, black walnut, licorice
    • Finish
Dry, bitter, dark malt, liquorice, tannins, some menthol, medium long

  27. markjedi1 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Lovely Macallan that develops like a three stage rocket. A soft, delicate nose; a powerful palate and a drying, tannic finish. But the whole works like a charm. Recommended. I really am sorry for not having purchased the first two Edition releases. They are better than their standard range and still quite affordable.
    • Nose
The nose is wonderfully sweet, but also a bit delicate. Bergamot oil, wilde flowers, vanilla, mokatine, heather honey, sweet butter and oranges. Becomes quite elegant on dried apricots, sultanas and some peach. A bit of maple syrup over vanilla ice cream. Spice-wise, I’m thinking cinnamon and cloves. Very, very nice.
    • Taste
It caresses the palate. Silky soft at first, but that does not last. It quickly becomes more sturdy. The spices kick in and the fruit explodes on the palate. A veritable taste-bomb, but powerful. Much more outspoken than the nose predicted. Gingerbread and dark fruit, a hint of candied grapefruit and some warm garden herbs. Thyme? But the fruit takes the lead and evolves towards apricots, sultanas and apples with some brown sugar.
    • Finish
The finish can easily be called long, with a warm and spicy edge, but also a bitter, tannic death.

An oaky NAS that is pleasant to drink. As the palate acclimates, the oakiness eases. Sherry, sweet on the palate. Oak bite on the finish that fades pleasantly.

A modern, engineered whisky, that while not so subtle, is easy to imbibe.

  30. Andytka3 scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

N- Firmly guarded by the oily resinous oak aroma that refuse to give way, surely more sherry and winery oriented in this one that build the solidness on the aroma. Fruitiness of orange oil seeps thru after a long fought, follow by dry peach, prune, fig and some fudge that are quintessential a "Macallan". Much like the Ed 1, not as charm as Ed 2, depending on which is your style.

P- The initial elementary modern sweetness dwindle the otherwise rather good nuttiness, spicy dried fruit and pungent orange peel.

F- Medium-long, ginger spices, fine restrained chewy spiciness, balanced and reasonably well arranged.

As the name suggests, this is the third installment in the Edition series. Released in September 2017, this single malt is a collaboration between The Macallan's master whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno and master perfumer, Roja Dove. Oak is the focus here and a high proportion of smaller oak casks were used to highlight distinctive aromas Dove found in particular casks. A combination of European and American oak refill casks were used as well as former bourbon barrels. This no-age statement release is bottled at 48.3% ABV with 250,000 bottles available globally.

the floral touch inspires me. This runs through the entire tasting.
My first Macallan. I'm excited. I think a very good PLV.
    • Nose
Sherry, dry sherry. Sweet, raisins, caramel, but also a very pronounced floral note. Lavender? I have not had that yet.
Nuts. Complex. Some citrus, milk chocolate and oak flavor.
      Great nose
    • Taste
bye starting. A strong flatterer. Sweetness of a rather dry sherry, fruity, dry berries, vanilla, plums, dark chocolate with some coffee, then the pleasant oak flavor. Here, too, something floral.
    • Finish
long. There remains an oak spice with sherry nuts. In the aftertaste from the throat lightly roasted hazelnuts with raisins. and again this very subtle floral note. I guess it got stuck in my nose.

Tasting Note by The ProducerNose: Reminiscent of a fine fragrance, the nose leads with vanilla ice cream, fresh cut oak and delicate florals. Orange oil provides subtle grandeur while ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg flit in and out in various guises. Vanilla imparts sweetness, leading citrus fruits forward then allowing chocolate to show. Burnished oak delivers a soft ending.
Palate: Sweet fruit, vanilla and rich fruit cake with suggestions of apricot, pear and crisp green apple. Hints of ginger and cinnamon are balanced with a light resinous oak finale.
Finish: Long, sweet and fruity, leaving a lasting impression on the senses.

The distillery teamed up with Master Perfumer Roja Dove to select the casks for this vatting.

God what a great series. This is still a very, very good whisky indeed.

    • Nose
A warming heather honey melted over creamy porridge.

Slightly lighter than the Ed. 2, becoming more citrusy, floral in places on the high notes.

Baked orchard fruits with cinnamon, nutmeg and maple syrup.

The dried fruits come: sultanas, apricots; fresh, perhaps more elegant and perfumed. Peaches.

Fresh apricots now. Mango. Toffee fudge, then lightly toasted wholemeal bread. Multiple layers. Jasmine. Strawberry jam and cream.

      https://malt-review.com/2017/10/07/macallan-edition-no-3/
    • Taste
Velvety, but not too cloying. Toffee fudge. Heather honey, moving into mead territory.

More intensely raisin-based, with orange marmalade, ginger and lemon juice.

Quite a spritely little thing. Back to golden syrup, much more vanilla. In the middle: herbal notes, sage and thyme. Apricots. Crabapple jelly. Brown sugar.

A lovely woody warmth that isn’t at all harsh or tannic: nutmeg here, with a wisp of peppermint or fennel perhaps on the finish. There’s a lovely lightness, a freshness about the whole thing.
