The PLV is not quite right here.
Joking aside; I'm sure it will have its lovers, but if I had had to shell out the current market price, it would have been pretty bitter. Click here for a detailed review: https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2021/11/22/evolution-of-lagavulin/

H2H- Lagavulin through the ages - as usual logic would dictate that the older ones would be better, but will that be the case? I already did a head to head of the 21, 25 and 30 and found the 25 to be better than most other people and between the 3 not that much in it so it will be interested to taste again. Lagavulin 16 is favourite of many on here for a go to islay dram and once price has been taken into account I  can gauge the best value and I suspect the 16 will do well here. Mid 1960`s to present 37 year, all official bottlings Drams

In theory the nose and palate should all have similarities so I will knock a few out from the start, tasting 8 heavy peaters is a lot for  my palate.   Nose The first to be discounted was the Jaz festival2015 and the 30 year but that might be because they were more delicate. next was the 21 year 1991 then the 37 year which left the NAS 1960`s, 16 year, 21 year 1985 and the 25 year.
    A difficult decision

    1 - 21 year 1985 2 - Pure Pot Still 60`s 3 - 37 year 4 - 16 year 5 - 25 year 6 - 30 year 7 - 21 year 1991 8 - 2015 Jazz festival Palate 1st tasting (tentative) 1 - 21 year 1985 2= - 21 year 1991 2= - 37 year 4 -2015 Jazz festival 5 - 25 year 6  - 30 year 7 - Pure Pot Still Nas 8 - 16 year
    2nd tasting 1 -1985 21 year 2 - 1991 21year 3 - 37 year 4 - 25 year 5 - Jazz festival 2015 6 - 30 year 7 - 16 year 8 - Nas pure pot still (been open a while)
After 2 tastings my top 3 were the same with the 25 year moving to 4th the Nas was bottom with the 16 year just beating it. The 30 year was a little delicate in this company. The big question is and the one that should give us all hope is that there was little in the first 6 placings and the 16 year was not far behind but the exta years maturation told. If You took price into consideration then the 16 year can hold its head up high.

Something is a bit fishy here - first I thought it's more about rotten wood but then it turned more into this salted and smoked codfish or sushi. Even though I like Sushi very much this bottling won't make it into my hall of fame.
    • Nose
Rather reluctant peat and smoke - for a Lagavulin - citrusy, malty, jam, little meaty too - not bad
    • Taste
Spices, just little sweetness and fruitiness, seaweed, salted smoked codfish?
    • Finish
Medium long, fortunately has a bit more punch that is missing in the beginning - rather drying

    With Water

The nose definitely gets fruitier and now there are some biscuit notes like digestives or porridge oats, that sort of thing.

The palate is similar as neat but the peat is at the forefront now with an initial blast but then fades into the background as the sweet notes take over, on slight caramel notes.

The finish is still long and still smooth.

This is really good and very refined. Lovers of Islay whisky who do not like to be saturated with peat would love this.

Excellent stuff but not worth anywhere near the silly money people want for it these days.
    • Nose
Sweet, peat is restrained, there are caramel notes mixed in with brine. There is also honeycomb, plain dark chocolate and ginger pudding with faint hints of orange.

Delicate to be honest for Lagavulin.
    • Taste
Quite thick and creamy it is sweet at first but then the peat comes in and adds a little bitterness to balance the sweet notes. There is some lemon/lime, orange peel zest, a little ginger, very faint aniseed and some meaty notes.
    • Finish
Long, smooth and delicate, very good.

This whisky sold for around $400 when it hit the market and was snapped up quickly. It may be available at some retailers, and is well worth the cost. The nose is dry and dusty, and reminds me of my grandfather’s pipe tobacco. It also reveals notes of old leather, wood stain and varnish, and a slight hint of peat. The taste builds on dried apricots and apples at the beginning to a solid smokiness, resinous and thick with a spicy kick on the tongue at the end. The finish is campfire smoke and pumpkin pie. Outstanding!

Lagavulin 30 yo (52.6%, OB, 2340 bottles, 2006)  Colour: pale gold. Nose: certainly bolder (maybe hotter and more spirity) and rather unusual, very different from what you’d expect from Lagavulin. Starts on rather bold notes of nutmeg, almonds, smoked tea, old books and maybe a little incense and starts developing on passion fruits, mangos, white currants and ripe peaches. Then we have a little mint, mint flavoured tea, peat smoke, liquorice tea, cigar box, hints of shoe polish… Finally apple skins, hints of ginger ale and old walnuts and we’re back to almonds (and a little coffee)… All that is rather subtle and I’d say it reminds me of the old 12yo. The fire’s gone but it left room for delicacy and subtlety. Mouth: just like with the Talisker (Talisker 30 yo, 51.9%, 2006), the palate seems to be bolder than the nose – and bolder than the Talisker’s. Also sweeter, fruitier and spicier, with lots of fresh nuts (macadamia spring to mind) and quite some lemon, grapefruit and liquorice stick. Grows bolder and peatier by the minute, with also a little ginger, cardamom, green, tea, apple skins… A fantastic development, from a maybe slightly shy start (considering it’s Lagavulin) to a bold, thick and extremely satisfying middle. The finish is long, almondy, peaty, smoky and salty (although a little less than the Talisker’s) and the whole is just a beautiful Lagavulin than doesn’t taste his age. I’d advise any taster to take his/her time with this one, it’s really the development that is fantastic – and I think this 30 yo has more to tell than the 25. Is that experience? 93 points.

perfect nosing of fruity style Lagavulin... but the mouthfeel is too youngish and not like a 30yo's whisky for me.. kinda pity but it's a fancy experience to taste this old pressure!

Nose: Fantastic scent of tropical fruits with prominent aromas of mango, papaya and pineapple. But also passion fruit and peach mix the maritime notes of salty sea air, seaweed and seaweed. In addition, fine and fragrant herbs and nut aromas (walnut and hazelnut), which can best assert themselves in combination with smoky peat. Honey and vanilla complete this perfect range of flavors.
Taste: Powerful, creamy-oily mouthfeel on a very fruity-salty base. More and more intense and tastier. Peat and smoke are getting into the game as well. With the emergence of slightly bitter aromas of nuts, oak (but no tannins) and some cardamom, the fruity impacts of the tropical fruits are slowly but surely displaced. Green tea with lemon and a dash of honey sticks subordinate to the palate.
Finish: Very, very long and a little bit harsh with great bound wood. In addition, traces of fresh mint and reviving fruit notes that remain maritime salinity remain until the end.
Comment: An impressive fruit composition that you do not find very often at Lagavulin. In addition, this constantly tingling saltiness, which make this filling a real classic with the voluminous mouthfeel! Since the 37-year-old but now has to put a lot of effort!

    Color: gold
Nose: magical start with ripe fruit mix of mango, pineapple and peach; maritime notes with sea salt and fresh seaweed; little smoke and peat. Emerging herbal and nut aromas combine with vanilla and delicious heather honey; ingenious!
Taste: Oily and creamy on a fruity, mineral-salty base; becoming absolutely powerful; Aromas of cardamom and the nut notes already present in the nose are added. Also some lemon and green tea sweetened with honey.
Finish: Very long, salty and minty fruit notes to the end.
Remark: Impressive fruitiness with a constantly tingling and more than pleasant saltiness. One of the best bottlings of Lagavulin!

Lagavullin so beautiful and harmonious. Some water refined the spicy oak and brings some fruity notes from the background forward.
