What is Single Malt Whisky?

Single malt whisky means malt whisky from one distillery. In Scotch law, “Single Malt Scotch Whisky” must be made only from water and malted barley, batch-distilled in pot stills, matured in Scotland for at least 3 years in oak casks ≤700 L, and bottled at ≥40% ABV (only water or E150a may be added). The same “single = one distillery” idea also underpins other jurisdictions’ rules. Note that “single” does not mean single cask.

On Whiskybase, “Single Malt Whisky” is used as a brand label to group many releases where the focus is the category rather than a proprietary brand—hence searching “Single Malt Whisky” in the Whiskybase Shop or site navigation yields a wide variety of bottlings across regions and producers.
