What is Islay Single Malt Whisky?

“Islay Single Malt Whisky” is the legal Single Malt Scotch Whisky category presented with the protected locality Islay—a place-name that may appear on labels only when all the whisky was distilled on Islay. By law, single malt must be made at one distillery, from water and malted barley only, in pot stills, matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks not exceeding 700 L, and bottled at ≥40% ABV (only water or plain caramel coloring/E150a may be added).

On Whiskybase, “Islay Single Malt Whisky” is used as a brand label to group many such releases where origin is foregrounded rather than a proprietary brand or named distillery—see the brand page and bottle examples listed under this phrasing.
