What is Highland Malt?

“Highland Malt” is an origin-led front-label phrase, not a legal category. By law, Scotch labels must use one of the five category names (i.e., Single Malt Scotch Whisky or Blended Malt Scotch Whisky) and may add the region “Highland” only if all the whisky was distilled within the Highland GI. The SWA’s labelling guidance and the 2009 Regulations set these rules for using locality/region names.

On Whiskybase, “Highland Malt” is used as a brand label to group such origin-signalled releases across many bottlers; you’ll find multiple real bottles titled simply “Highland Malt.” Searching under this brand returns varied entries rather than one proprietary line.
