[September 2023] A Laphroaig from the glorious old times of this (once) fine distillery is a must try, despite the heavy price tag...

...and it is worth a try, no doubt. It is more straight (less complex) than earlier editions (before 2018), but it is both interesting to explore and enjoyable to sip - provided you own the deep pockets to buy such expensive bottles.
    • Nose
      91 91
The colour is amber, and of course I use a big spherical blender's glass to nose this old beauty (which is recommended for complex and subtle drams, always). The first sniff offers a rather phenolic profile (compared with older releases) with firm wooden notes. After some breathing the Laphroaig fruits join in, together with maritime impressions and the hospital bandages notes Laphroaig is (was) famous for. By the way, there is a huge difference between the nose of the blender's glass and an ordinary Glencairn (I filled both glasses at the time) with the blender's glass being much more complex, balanced and enjoyable, which is good for a 2-3 points higher score after about 30 minutes of breathing (not kidding).
    • Taste
      91 91
The taste is a real chewer, and I strongly advise to chew even the first sip as the dram releases much more impressions on the taste buds this way. No, this releases is not as complex (and subtle) than older releases hence it is rather a continued profile of the last five editions with more powerful peaty and wooden notes. But still this is an interesting and very enjoyable dram which provides a lot of fun to my taste buds. There is no flaw that I can detect, and the more sips I drink the better the taste gets as if my taste buds have to adapt to this profile first.
    • Finish
      89 89
The dram arrives warming and coating on my palate with some minor drying moments from both the peat and the wood which are not distracting here. The texture is not as good as that of older releases hence the finish is of medium length only (as it misses the sticky oiliness). It turns a little astringent-drying towards the end, but as these impressions come rather from the peat (and not that much from tannins) this is not bad at all, unless you do not like peat - but then you would not buy such an expensive Laphroaig, would you? Some water release much more impressions both in the nose and on the palate, and I strongly suggest to add at least a minor splash. This is good for two additional points, but do not add too much as the dram flattens quickly. I prefer this Laphroaig at around 43% abv.
