Old peat with full of raisins and plum. So complex that I can't even describe. Without a doubt one of the best whiskies I've ever tasted.

An incredibly unfamiliar, "White Glendronach."
Not bad, but not impressive either.
  • Nose
    89 89
An impression that is relatively (much) brighter and more vibrant compared to the Iberian. The bitterness of grape stems and woody vanillic notes strike first, while citrusy fruits reminiscent of tangerine and green herb aromas intertwine charmingly. It provides higher intuitive satisfaction at the nosing stage. After some airtime, much like the Iberian, the signature Glendronach Paxarette character reveals itself.
  • Smaak
    88 88
Upon taking a sip, a vibrant fruitiness spreads along with the smoothness of milk chocolate. It has a refreshing and crisp nuance, akin to unripe melon or watermelon rind. A sweetness reminiscent of underripe nectarine shows the faint, minimal presence of the PX cask finish. The body feels even lighter than the Iberian.
  • Finish
    88 88
Thanks to the overall light body, it boasts remarkably high drinkability and goes down effortlessly. Behind the clean-dropping finish, a subtle nuance of white flowers lingers, leaving a pleasant, vivid vanillic presence. Even on the second sip, it leaves a powerful nuance that makes me think, "There is no way this didn't come from an ex-bourbon cask."

A second-fill Glendronach is still a Glendronach. (Though it's actually a first-fill).
  • Nose
    88 88
An overall dark and dry nuance. It begins with a heavy baseline of subtle raisins, dark chocolate, and savory nuts, accompanied by a unique touch reminiscent of a Madeira wine cask. Cinnamon-forward spices provide a nice accent. After some airtime, it reveals a thick, jammy sweetness typical of Glendronach sherry—a grape aroma reminiscent of Paxarette.
  • Smaak
    90 90
It feels like a textbook example of a well-made Oloroso sherry (with a second-fill vibe). There is a smooth continuity of character that starts from grape stems, moves to fresh grapes, and gently transitions into rich raisins. A light vanillic note and a resinous character, likely derived from virgin oak nuances, brush past, while the tannins from the oak come through weaker than expected.
  • Finish
    91 91
The bitter yet cozy aroma of a cigar and the fruit nuance of plum continue, with the character of charred oak asserting a distinct presence as time goes on. After adding a water drop (2 drops), it leaves a heavy floral note along with a unique, soap-like lingering scent.

Assorted autumn desserts.
  • Nose
The aromas of chocolate topped with Cheonhyehyang (Jeju citrus) and savory cookie dough blend together in a complex layer. Behind it, a slightly bitter fruitiness reminiscent of fruit peels brushes past, giving an overall impression of a gorgeous, vibrant perfume.
  • Smaak
A sour yet slightly astringent flavor, sitting somewhere right between dried persimmon and fresh persimmon, is felt on the palate. The texture in the mouth winds around quite chewily, as if biting into a fruit jelly, while a subtle minty freshness and a savory savoriness (umami), as if adding a pinch of salt, brush by. Just before swallowing, it transitions into a bittersweet chocolate flavor, akin to about 50% cacao.
  • Finish
A long, lingering afterimage of colorful fruits, including orange and red apple, continues. A chocolate note that has become a shade brighter than on the palate blooms, leaving the signature bright, vibrant nuance of a bourbon cask, with the finish extending long and gracefully.

Milk caramel with a zesty twist.
  • Nose
    90 90
Fruit aromas of plum and citrus come through with a notably sharper resolution compared to the previous glasses. A vanillic nuance smoothly binds the fruit notes of the top notes together, followed by the sweetness of milk caramel. There is almost no alcohol booze, making the nosing experience incredibly comfortable.
  • Smaak
    91 91
Upon taking a sip, it begins with the flavors of salted caramel and chocolate, firmly holding down the center. A faint hint of citrus, as if adding a pinch of tangerine, breaks up the monotony. As it reaches the tail end of the palate, a subtle floral nuance of white flowers quietly but firmly asserts its presence.
  • Finish
    90 90
The milk caramel and vanillic character leave a very intuitive and sweet aftertaste. As the lingering image of sweetness that filled the mouth passes, a soft oakiness arrives late, wrapping up cleanly with the bitterness of high-content cacao

An Ardbeg with a clear narrative.
  • Nose
    88 88
Fruit notes reminiscent of peach or plum are intertwined with a subtle peat, like a bonfire or smoky aroma. Behind that, a touch of citrus from tangerine peel and a very faint, highly volatile note of acetone briefly brush past.
  • Smaak
    90 90
The intuitive sweetness of sugarcane and a nuance of light stone fruit syrup fill the mouth. The presence of peat is surprisingly minimal, and a soft texture characteristic of dairy products is felt. Overall, it has high drinkability, going down smoothly without any catching points.
A palate that neatly shaves off Ardbeg’s signature, somewhat burning throat-hit, while appropriately infusing apricot notes. I feel this is a character that even those who don't usually enjoy Ardbeg could view quite positively.
  • Finish
    89 89
It transitions into the bitter sweetness of sugarcane peel, while a savory and bitter flavor reminiscent of roasted ginkgo nuts lingers. The peatiness that kept a low profile on the palate rears its head again in the finish, followed by a long, sweetish aftertaste.

A slightly dialed-down Bowmore.
(with oak sticks)
  • Nose
    89 89
Maritime peat, with intuitive nuances of sea breeze and salinity, comes right to the forefront. Behind the peat, bright and vibrant fruit notes reminiscent of green grapes or green apples linger in the background, beautifully balancing the overall profile.
  • Smaak
    87 87
The bitterness of herbal medicine, including licorice, along with herbal nuances, strikes first. The character of peat comes through quite strongly across the entire palate, accompanied by a heavy oak wood character that feels almost a bit too intense. However, at the very last moment, a sudden twist of fruit sweetness emerges like a plot twist, refreshing the entire mood.
While the overall nuances are present, the resolution is somewhat disappointing due to the limitation of the ABV.
  • Finish
    88 88
Rather than on the palate, a bubblegum-like sweet nuance comes alive even more sweetly in the finish. The lingering afterimage of fruitiness that rises late after swallowing is quite characteristic. On the other hand, the strong presence of peat from the beginning gradually loses its strength and fades away, finishing with a lingering, astringent tannic sensation from the oak on the tongue.

Overall, I’d say the nose is surprisingly good—it shows great promise—though I can't quite say the palate and finish fully live up to what the nose promised. It is very spicy, and that can throw off the balance by adding a touch of harshness; personally, that doesn't bother me much, but tastes differ—some might find it off-putting, while others might love it. Would I drink it? Yes, I would. Considering it’s a 10-year-old whisky and looking at the price point, I think it delivers good value; it may have some slight rough edges, but that’s perfectly normal for its class and entirely acceptable. Cheers.
  • Nose
    85 85
Upon opening the cork, the aromas wafting from the bottle are of a light, clean, and elegant peat—underpinned by sea salt and seaweed, with just a hint of tartness—though this fades quickly, giving way to sweet malt notes reminiscent of biscuits and cookie dough. When I pour it into a Glencairn glass, I detect salted caramel, the warmth of charred oak, a touch of somewhat superficial vanilla, and a hint of chocolate—or perhaps more accurately, cocoa powder. To put it precisely, the aroma evokes a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a scoop of chocolate ice cream topped with citrus zest. These notes are accompanied by ginger, a touch of black pepper, charred oak, and a subtle salinity. A nose this layered and rich at this level is truly wonderful.
  • Smaak
    82 82
Upon tasting it, I detected a fleeting hint of citrus in the first sip, but spices—specifically ginger, black pepper, and a warmth reminiscent of charred oak—quickly became dominant. On the second sip, while it lacked an oily texture, it certainly felt full-bodied; there was a touch of spicy sharpness that intensified and became distinct a few seconds into the tasting. This time, notes of malt, honey-like sweetness, and a very subtle cocoa flavor came through right at the start. With the third and final sip, a brief initial sweetness gave way to an overwhelming wave of spices—intense black pepper, ginger, and the heat of charred black oak—coating the entire palate.
  • Finish
    82 82
On the finish, the initial impressions are clearly of charred black oak and black pepper, with a touch of heat from ginger—alongside faint spices, there are also notes of green and dried herbs, as well as hints of walnut and hazelnut shells that I didn't want to overlook. This warmth lingers for a while rather than fading quickly; later, when I try to pick up aromas via the retronasal passage, I detect fleeting grapefruit zest and a momentary malt sweetness, followed by dominant spices, a whisper of sea salt, faint traces of seaweed, and an atmosphere reminiscent of the seashore or a beach. The aromas persist for a medium duration, yet they don't cut off abruptly; they linger a bit longer, fading into a subtle, faint presence.

Only 43%, but very tasty. If colored then all bets are off, but if natural casks, most likely sherry (mostly). So like anything being tasted and how much it's liked I like it a lot. Maybe it's 90, maybe not. But in my present state, it is. I have a cask strength Glengone to compare it to. 1/3 sherry casks half refill (?) and few bourbon barrels. There seems to be some caring by the distillery as it uses 21 year old and older casks. It's also pricey. But it comes in a nice box. So be it! The cask strength is cheaper. But I think it's a little better. To me price has SOME meaning. But with inflation, tariffs and whatever have you I don't know. I should stop guessing and just taste. No one cares any more.
