Quite impressive, but this doesn't taste like whisky to me at all or at least not like something I'm directly searching for in a whisky.
Initially I was certain this was an older cognac or maybe armagnac, but it turned out to be this Kavalan. I've retasted it since, but to me the experience is still closer to a wine distillate than a grain distillate; obviously due to the very prominent cask influence.
-
A thick sherry wine like note, sweet and sour, red fruits, sour cherries, stewed pear, dades, some sticky toffee/caramel sweetness, chocolate, a little sweet nuttyness (like sugar coated almonds) and some clove like spices.
-
Aggressive on alcohol, probably around 60%, dark bitter chocolate, the sour cherries, a sweet and sour wine/cognac note, wood spice (clove) with a little bitterness.
-
Very long, again the dark chocolate, a cognac like sweet and sour fruitiness and warming wood spices (mostly clove).
