Taste comparison with Lagavulin 16 (2008)
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/280705/lagavulin-16-year-old#leave-a-review

    1. Which of the two whiskies did you like better?
I liked my Jacob better than my Wilhelm.

    2. Why did you like whisky a) better than whisky b)?

    Nose
Cold smoke, herbal and slightly metallic, wafts from the glass containing 2.5cl of my Wilhelm; the smoky note of my Jacobs is rather warm and not the dominant aroma like with Wilhelm.
Wilhelm has a more youthful feel than Jacob. It offers notes of banana, grated ginger, and dried herbs, while Jacob, with its dried orange peel, dried apricots, and quince jelly, almost resembles a (robust) Speyside malt. Both form nice legs, but Wilhelm's flow more quickly and therefore dissolves faster. Wilhelm has seaweed and a medicinal note, which Jacob lacks, sticking to warm smoke and other aromas.
    Wilhelm: 85/100 Jacob: 90/100

    The taste
Wilhelm immediately lays a cold, slightly metallic whiff of smoke on his tongue. Very dry, herbal. Grapefruit, lime juice, grated ginger.
Jacob is creamy and has dried orange peel, honey and vanilla aromas; only then does the smoke come, which seems warm and gently envelops the other aromas.
Wilhelm makes a fresh and maritime impression, with a very pronounced cold peat smoke note. It tingles on the tip of the tongue, which I find surprising given its mere 43% ABV. Jacob, on the other hand, doesn't come across as maritime at all, but rather earthy and loamy, more like dry deciduous forest floor with mushrooms than beach and sea salt. Jacob sticks to its aromas, most notably the dried orange peel. Later, a peppery note emerges in Jacob, coating the lips. Wilhelm doesn't last long enough for that to happen.
    Wilhelm: 84/100 Jacob: 89/100

    Departure
Wilhelm quickly thins out and becomes flimsy, leaving behind cold smoke, sea salt, and now a touch of cayenne pepper. Jacob, on the other hand, seems reluctant to leave; he's the typical "just-another-hour-in-the-hallway-chatter" type. All the aromas linger, rippling through the mouth from front to back and vice versa. Wow.
    Wilhelm: 83/100 Jacob: 90/100

    Conclusion and comparative assessment
My Jacob is so much better than my Wilhelm, what a huge difference! Wilhelm comes across as rather boisterous, he puts on quite a show (look at me, I'm from Islay), but that's about all he's got, so the Potemkin village collapses the moment he takes his first sip. My Jacob is a gentleman, seemingly unflappable. He does his thing. And if that means he comes across like a peaty Speyside whisky, then so be it. Jacob fills the mouth where Wilhelm is already out of breath.

    3. Which of the two whiskies is the old bottling, and which is the new one?
My Jacob is the old bottling, my Wilhelm is the new bottling.
