Bruno Mangin should be congratulated for this bottling. He not only created a truly unique solution to the problem of producing unpeated whisky, but also derived a response with a detail unique to his region. The end result is a truly enjoyable and surprising product, though the nose needs some work. The dilution may be a bit excessive, but it's surprising that it shows no signs of youth. Tasteful!

    Price performance: Good.
Would I buy it again?: I'd like to keep it on my shelf if it were easy to access, as it's an interesting bottle, yes.
    • Nose
      80 80
An interesting nose, grapes, kiwi, lots of smokiness, and a meatiness like saucisson or dried meat. Exhaust. Lots of acetone and solvent-likeness, chemicality. Paprika, garlic powder, fenugreek. Subtle hints of youth; green apple. The smell of a garbage bag. Over-ripe banana, banana peel. Maybe a slight char. Cigarette smoke. Seared meat. Dates. A slight palo santo. Roasted onions. Matches. The smell of sweat, maybe a slightly off-kilter underside like egg white. Grilled red plums. Interesting, for sure, but not for everyone; the off-kilter scents intensify and multiply over time; spoiled stone fruits, and eventually, the smoked side rises again.
    • Taste
      85 85
A beautiful, balanced palate. Smoked meat, tortilla. It doesn't feel too diluted. Dried tomatoes. Umami. No flaws on the palate. It's quite intense and has a nice medium body. Like Doritos Alaturka. Black sesame. Pastrami and fenugreek. Marmite. A slight mustardiness. Chestnut kebab. Paprika again. A definitely atypical palate, it makes up for the flaws in the nose.
    • Finish
      83 83
Burnt animal fat, cigarette smoke, and a slight ashiness. Plenty of smoked meat and dried tomatoes continue. Light garlic powder. A slight tang like red plum jam. Red apple compote. There's not much intensity left on the finish. A medium-short finish. No flaws, but the dilution is slightly noticeable, though not too bothersome.

tuyé smoked (this typical shed made for smoking salted meats including those of Morteau, here was put inside to be smoked naturally)
    nose:
on a shellfish platter with unsalted iodine!
    blocked:
earthy, on the buckwheat cream, on the sensation when opening a delicatessen in the Doubs, old, badly ventilated but where the sausages and other meats still hang above the counter; salt there in abundance
    the smoke from the shops of yesteryear which used wood to smoke their meats and entice the customer;
a little smoked fern, otherwise, vanilla and malty, creamy on honey
    final:
vanilla, ashes from the wood fire, malt, sweet spices.
    an amazing peated indeed!
