...If this is Islay (and it is), then it's an exceptionally smooth drink. More coastal and not peaty. Fruity, sweet-salty with a "shherry" edge. You could say good "old school"... and the new version (if there's no comparison) suits me. And if we are to compare, the "old" version is more refined, and I'll say it again – it has that "something."
    • Nose
...dried fruit on the front row: dry raisins, cranberries, figs – not the dried kind, but the hard, really dry ones. In the second row, a slight saltiness alternating with delicate sweetness. I'll add some umami. I have some of the "newer" version, and it's somehow more elegant on the nose. Less aggressive. I'll check the empty one – there's aromatic, fragrant tobacco, something like sandalwood, or a bit of wood. There's a hint of fermented yeast, some greenery, and… more tobacco. I'm going back to the fuller version – again, fruit, pleasant "wood" on the palate, no typical bitter tannins. Instead, there are more leather and tobacco notes. I have to admit, this "old" one has that certain something.
    • Taste
A pleasant, sweet-salty, creamy liquid. There's a subtle difference here compared to current versions. Raisins, dried figs, and a nutty aftertaste. The liquid is creamy with a delicate bitterness and dark chocolate, leaving a tobacco aftertaste. The strength is standard for a whisky, but here it's almost imperceptible. It settles nicely in the mouth. Another approach – subdued fruitiness, smooth barrel notes, dark chocolate, tobacco, and just the right amount of spice. Overall, it's quite subtle and easy to drink, and just as the nose suggested – it has that certain something.
    • Finish
...of the delicate variety. Perhaps not overly so, but pleasantly warming. Coherent with the aromas, all the flavors. Simply an extension of the above. Not aggressive, in fact, harmonious and well-balanced. Allowing me to enjoy it for a while longer, even though the liquid has flowed into my being.
