Yoichi had been one of my favorite distilleries. The output the past 8+ years though have been quite atrocious. This was bottled in 2010, so this was "old" Yoichi. Old Yoichi essentially is anything bottled before or around 2013... that was when the whole Japanese whisky craze started with the Yamazaki Sherry Cask winning the whisky of the year in the Whisky Bible.

Beautiful oak spices, sharp whiff of dried herbs, and there are also charcoal, earth, peat, soot and oils. Exemplary sherry cask, great distillate, with old school flavors. Finally, a nice layer of dried fruits. This is why I love Yoichi's!

Very, very dry initially, but the palate goes on and on. Perhaps the strong ABV has something to do with it. Lots of leather, tree bark, along with fresh cherries and strawberries. With water, aaah, the mouthfeel becomes creamier, and the initial dryness mostly dissipated. A bit of water is obligatory here methinks.

I only have a 30ml sample. Wish I have more so I can play with the water.
These older Japanese whiskies have become quite cost-prohibitive and the prices have become indecent. Makes me sad because I love these older Yoichis.
