What is Cigar Malt?

Cigar Malt isn’t a legal Scotch category. It’s a marketing/style term used for whiskies—usually single malts—selected or blended to pair well with cigars. Producers often lean on sherry-forward or wine-influenced casks and, at times, higher strengths to match cigar intensity (i.e., The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve uses ex-bourbon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Oloroso; Tamdhu Cigar Malt II is first-fill European oak sherry at 53.8% ABV; Tomintoul Cigar Malt is Oloroso-led with some peated components). Labels must still carry the correct Scotch category (i.e., “Single Malt Scotch Whisky”) and avoid any misleading presentation under the Scotch Whisky Regulations.
