Easy to see why this one was so popular and well-received back in the day. It's a great Lagavulin, but just not worth its price at all.

But it is Lagavulin aged entirely in sherry casks made of European Oak. Great things happen when the Lagavulin distillate gets paired with a good quality cask, and the complexity here is very good. A bit less heat and more rich sweetness would have bumped up the score a bit for me, although this is still excellent stuff.
    • Nose
Pure Lagavulin on the nose. Layers of oily, fatty, phenolic peat with. a slight caramelized sensation to it, burnt bacon, medicinal aromas, sea salt, and lots of tarry fishing ropes. With time it opens up much more, eventually smelling like burnt apple pie, citrus fruits of the grapefruit and blood orange variety, and spent matchsticks.
    • Taste
Hot and oily, lots of seared meats, black peppercorns that were charred in a pan, smoked green Chartreuse, lemon-lime juice, and lots of tar and engine oil. Not exactly what you'd expect from typical sherry cask maturation, it's quite meaty, gamey, and herbal. Salted and a bit sulphur but in a good way.
    • Finish
Long and dry. More sea salt and bbq ashes, cigars, salted blackberry jam, salted liquorice, more engine oil, and lots of herbal sensations. This is definitely unique!
