1114-BLACK RUBY JOHNNIE WALKER BLENDED SCOTCH WHSKY 40%
...I treat this new "Black Ruby" bottle as another bottle that, in my opinion, is a dud. It's a one-time purchase, drink it and forget it. If there are people who like it, then respect. The bottle looks dignified, and that's a big plus... the rest is so-so. I still have some leftover 12-year-old Sherry Finish—much better and more drinkable, but it's still twelve years old, so it's had time to settle in. This "Black Ruby," unfortunately, no longer is.
    • Nose
...even though the bottle is black, it's a traditional, straw-colored whisky. There's a lot of ripe, dark, traditional garden fruit here—currants, cherries, blackberries, not to mention raspberries and plums. It's all in the head, straight out of nowhere. After a while, something toasted begins to emerge. Apparently, there's a hint of smoke here... if I don't detect it, unless it's a subtle one?! I leave it and check the empty bottle—and then I'm disappointed. I'm looking for something I won't find. It's a waste of time, so I return to the full version—now with more grain, yeast. There are some toasted sunflower seeds and linseed. The fruit gradually gives way to those grainy notes. There's also a subtle hint of wine barrels. So far, I'm not impressed with this version.
    • Taste
...first impression, a creamy liquid. Nutty and extremely grainy. The grains weren't spared here. Burnt, overheated cereal, oatmeal made with water, a bit tasteless. There's a lot of barrel, bitterness, and tannins. The distillate is slightly sweet. Not very fruity. ...is there smoke here? I don't detect it. Maybe something's wrong? Over time, I discover a bit of saltiness with spices like pepper, ginger, and pickled garlic, which have already lost their essence. It reminds me of a bitter, warm oily aftertaste. Unfortunately, I don't like it. I try it several times, and nothing changes. I know there are fans of anything labeled "Johnnie Walker," but unfortunately, I'm not one of them, which doesn't mean I reject all "Johnnie Walker" products.
    • Finish
... medium, oily, more grainy than malty. Roasty, slightly sweet yet salty.
