    Haribo²
Not so long ago I tasted my first release from the Firkin Whisky Company. That was a Coal Ila 2010 in a Marsala barrel (number SC21), bottled at 48.9%. Last weekend I received another sample from my friend Benny J of a Coal Ila from the same company, sister barrel SC6AB, also a Marsala barrel, of which only 30 bottles were filled - at exactly the same ABV! – for the whisky shop Tensu from Houthalen-Helchteren. I therefore assume that they will be very similar. And that means we're going to have a liquid party again.
Yes, this is candy sweet and very beautiful. The difference is mainly in the fact that the juicy apricots and Haribo bears dominate here and the typical character of Caol Ila only emerges in the second instance. Think white fruit and citrus, soft peat and a subtle salty edge. From that perspective, it's Haribo squared.
The body is fine and the malt is an excellent balance between (very!) sweet and (very!) brackish. Apples versus sea breeze, apricots versus salt, honey versus woodsmoke. And how beautifully that goes hand in hand. Very attractive, although I imagine some home enthusiasts will find this a bit too sweet. The Marsala barrel was certainly dominant.
And in the finish, I can certainly follow that. In my opinion, it remains a little too sweet and now obscures the distillery character a little too much. Nevertheless, this remains very tasty.
Yes, they are clearly identical twins. Nice stuff. Nice selection by manager Wim. Thank you, Benny!
