Kilchoman farm barley aged in sherry 7.5 years in Oloroso sherry. Decently dark, pretty active cask

Kilchoman farm barley funk is all over this. It's almost a barnyard smell, medicinal and rural. There's a metallic note in common with other Kilchoman farm barley bottlings - is it copper? Lots of alcohol rising to the surface. Industrial smoke - like a steam train. Sherried sweetness (chocolate, candied almonds, leather) becomes apparent mid-sniff but is difficult to identify under the wave of barley aroma. Also the slightest hint of orange citrus.

Smoked meat, copper pennies and farmyard funk explode on first contact. Perhaps slightly sulfured? Oloroso notes predominate once the whisky is held in the mouth: chocolate, nuts and leather, but it can hardly be described as sweet - actually rather more bitter. Throughout there is a strong undertone of an almost industrial smoke - coal fire - and a sensation of salinity.

Long. Used matchsticks, slight oxidative sherry notes, pervasive salinity and intense minerality. Finally, a slight sensation of sweetness from those sherry notes. Continuing warmth.

Certainly a unique whisky, but also likely to be a divisive one. Kilchoman's core range of 100% Islay whiskies are mostly bourbon-matured, so an interesting exploration into farm barley and Oloroso casks. I feel this needed more time in the cask to properly integrate. Presently, the influence of farm barley dominates. Perhaps this will improve with time in the bottle.
