About North of Scotland

The Strathmore distillery was apparently active between 1957 and 1980 and used the name 'North of Scotland'.
It was founded by George Christie on a site that used to be a brewery, not far away from Cambus. There have been some experiments with the production of malt whisky, but to no avail - the buildings were demolished in 1993.

Some of the warehouses are still used by the Cambus Distillery. Today mostly known as North of Scotland, she made a single grain under the name Alloa*

*There was indeed once an "Alloa" distillery also known as "Grange" which was located at Grange Road, Alloa, Clackmannanshire. It's not certain when this was founded, but it was in use in 1795 when it was run by Alexander Glen. It was closed in 1851 and the location is now used by Diageo, I believe as a mill. The above "Alloa" grain whisky was produced by North of Scotland or Strathmore distillery.

Some sources say they made Patent-still malt whisky until 1960. George Christie say in the book 'The whisky men' by Gavin D. Smith: "We started of with two pot stills as well, but we changed over for all grain in the first 18 months because we knew damn well that we couldn't produce enough. We used the pot stills to produce a single malt we called 'Strathmore', wich we would last make probably in 1958". Also said: "We put in the the two pot stills first, because we were just thinking we were going to make a malt whisky, and I don't think it ever occurred to us that we might make grain, because at that time all the grain distilleries were quite big". Had three modified continuous still (Coffey). Demolished 1993.
