About Charles Mackinlay & Co.

Charles Mackinlay & Co. was a Scotch whisky blending and bottling company established in Leith in the early 19th century. It became known for creating the Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt blend and later for supplying whisky to the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907 led by Ernest Shackleton, bottles of which were famously recovered a century later. The firm was eventually absorbed into larger whisky groups and is now part of the Whyte & Mackay portfolio. Its name is remembered as part of Scotland’s historic blending houses and for its connection to early global whisky export and exploration history.
