About

The only distillery in Scotland to be named after it's owners John and James Grant. Glen Grant was the first distillery to be constructed in the Speyside town of Rothes, Commencing production in 1840. The number of stills was increased from four to six in 1973 and from six to ten in 1977, though today only eight are in operation. Glen Grant is the leading single malt whisky in Italy and is the second best selling single malt in the world.
In 1886 it had eight washbacks, 7,000 gallons each. Two wash stills, 5,000 and 2,500 gallons each. Two spirit stills, 2,500 and 1,600 gallons each. Glen Grant No.2 (Caperdonich) starts 1897 opposite Glen Grant. Pneumatic malting drums are installed 1898 to complement the floor maltings. Floor malting ends 1964. Drum malting ends 1971 (72?). Expands from four to six pot stills 1973. Expands to ten pot stills total in 1977. The four old pot stills remains coal fired. In 1986 a major renovation. Tears down the old still house. New and bigger steam-heated pot stills are installed (four wash and four spirit). Shell and tube condensators are installed. Uses a 12,3 tonnes semi-lauter mash tun. Ten Oregon pine washbacks.

For the price you can't expect much. Well that's exactly what we got.

A standard tour by an uninterested guide whithout any knowledge about the details, process etc.

The 2 core range drams at the end fitted in nicely.

Pity, the distillery lays in a beautiful surrounding (we didn't have time to wander about in the garden) and has it own feel also. The older bottlings are very good so why not invest in better tour(guide)s and special tastings?
