Testing samples from Scientific Lectures

This is my first whisky review, and it’s not even a proper one at that, but I still think it might be of interest to the you folk here too (also posted this in a Danish Whisky forum @ Facebook)

I’ve had the opportunity to test and taste a whisky experience from a new project, namely Scientific Lectures (scientific-lectures.com), where I’m also signed up for the first lecture on distilling.

I received two whisky samples, hand-delivered to my door, along with a full A4 page (per sample) detailing the yeast and the production process behind each one – delightfully nerdy.

In addition to the two samples, I also received an unique test-tube whisky glass, which must serve to highlight the academic nature of the project – double the nerdiness, double the fun!

When you’re interested in the process like I am, it’s quite fascinating to read about the history of the yeast (especially since it’s a Danish yeast!), the malt, and the fermentation process. Being able to taste the samples at the same time really ties the experience together. I’m looking forward to that lecture.

Sample 1, 42%

Smoked birch and cherry wood with yeast 002

Color: Beautiful light golden.

Nose: Smoky, chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Tingling all over the mouth. It covers every corner; all taste buds are activated, and it finishes nice and dry.

Taste: A bit more of a traditional smoky whisky in flavor – persistent and full-bodied. It tastes a bit like how grandpa’s pipe tobacco used to smell. Notes of vanilla, butter, grass, leather, and a freshness that makes it lighter and more accessible. The wood flavor lingers for a long time and keeps reminding you of the flavor experience you just had.

If you enjoy medium-smoked whisky, this one is really nice. I would love to see this become available to the public.

Sample 2, 42%

Spontaneously fermented whisky

Truly exciting with lots of different elements. Mild and light honey color.

Nose: Light, sweet, and fresh with notes of sunflower and vanilla.

Taste: Very soft, round, and warm in the mouth with good volume. A balanced sweetness and notes of orange, with a longer lingering flavor that, for me, has a certain nostalgic element – like school erasers or my grandparents’ oak furniture.

A different kind of whisky – in a good way. If I wanted to impress my whisky-loving friends, this would definitely hit the table.

I’m looking forward to more experiences with the project!
