The highest ppm

Hi to everyone! I hope no one starts to preach that ppm isn’t everything, or that it doesn’t even tell which are the peatiest ones. I know at least something about that already even though being a bit of a newbie. It’s just that I’ve found that it is one simple guide to acquire a whisky that I like. So I’ve gathered some whiskies with the highest ppm you can possibly find. Now I wonder if I’ve missed something. These are my bottles with the highest ppm:

Octomore 8.3  309

Octomore 6.3 258

Octomore 10 years 208

Octomore 11.3 194

Ardbeg Hypernova 170

I will receive a friend for a tasting so may I try to impress by saying that I have the peatiest whiskies there are? wink

I’d say that 8.3 may be a bit too much and 6.3 has not yet arrived. At this moment I prefer Octomores 10y and 11.3 and of Ardbegs the Corryvreckan instead of Hypernova. So it’s not only the highest ppm for me anyway.

Remember that these PPM statements are pre-distillation. After distillation (and ageing) the PPM drops drastically, so the PPM of those bottles will actually be much lower (and potentially lower than other bottles). Some Torabhaig cask and new make samples state the PPM before and after - in general it looks like the PPM after distillation is around a third of what it was before.

Also - Octomore 15.3 has 307 ppm, think it's not released yet though, but it has a Whiskybase page.

Plus, as you've mentioned, PPM isn't everything, there are other flavour compounds that add "peaty" flavours and of course there are many different kinds of peat (smoky, maritime, grassy, farmy, medicinal, etc.). But those whiskies you've listed are certainly peaty.

Manchester Pyromaniacs researched this in detail a few years back:

They concluded that Balcones Brimstone was the peatiest whisk[e]y and by a long chalk.
