[September, 2020] Another mystery Speyside dram from the early seventies, most of them have been Glenfarclas so far...

...and this profile indicates another fine dram from Ballindalloch. Until 1979 Glenfarclas owned a very fruity profile which changed almost overnight in 1980 (nonetheless, the Glenfarclas remained a decent dram with the newer less-fruity profile until today). These early seventies Speysiders are a pretty save bet so catch a bottle if you spot one at an affordable price.
    • Nose
      94 94
The colour is yellow gold and the nose offers an adorable complex profile of all the aromas I like most - fruits, honeys, waxes, floral impressions, vegetable oils, spices, shy herbs and and and... No off-note or imbalance, all is close to perfection. I could sniff this for hours but unfortunately the nose looses steam upon oxydation so savour the dram immediately after serving.
    • Taste
      94 94
The taste is multi-layered and multi-faceted and a real chewer. It releases dozens of different impressions over time and all of them are pleasing to my taste buds. I do not name them here because others did this better than I can, already. I enjoy this taste very much, even the somewhat more bitter flavours which provide a nice counterpart to all the fruits, sugars and honeys. Funnily, some layers appeal to me as if I chew flowers (you know, these eatable blossoms some chefs use to decorate their dishes) and I like these impressions.
    • Finish
      92 92
The dram arrives very charming on the palate with a thick, creamy texture covering all of the mouth instantly. No distracting moments during the initial mouthfeel. The finish is long and adds some more bitter notes of green-tea or tobacco and a minor drying feeling which is not distracting. The waxes and oils have the say during the finish and this is fine (to me). Water releases even more fruits both in the nose and on the palate and turns the finish smoother but it kills the layers (like so often). So I prefer to explore this dram neat first and then add some water for a greater drinking pleasure.
