[January, 2022] I think this dram might be a good start into 2022...

...and it is, indeed. Unfortunately, chances are close to zero to spot such a bottle these days and I guess everyone who owns it will not sell it come hell or high water. Right so, but only if you crack it open and enjoy it preferably with good friends before you die - or your heirs will mix it with cola (unless you educated them well).
    • Nose
      92 92
The colour is burnished and the nose offers a trademark old traditional Highland-style profile with lots of interesting waxes, different kinds of leather, both dusty warehouse and attics aromas and an interesting ginger note beside the obvious Mortlach flavours and meatiness. This is both quite unusual and very joyful to sniff.
    • Taste
      94 94
The taste is not layered but nicely chewable and offers much more flavours this way. Beside the obvious old-style sherry impressions there are tasty coffee and chocolate notes, herbs, spices and waxes. After some chewing floral impressions join in together with vegetable oils and tobacco leaves. Wow, what a complex profile for a 14-years old - compare this to today's 14-years old and you will understand the difference between old-style (subtle and complex) and modern-style (punchy and simple) maturations. By the way, this mainly depends on the variety of casks available and all cask management is streamlined today (hence the results are uniform in style).
    • Finish
      93 93
The dram arrives warming and despite the 57% abv without any hot moments on my palate. The texture is great and covers my mouth within seconds without distracting moments. Accordingly, the finish is long and adds more chocolatey notes and herbs, what a beautiful combo. Again, there are no distracting moments until the very end and the alcohol never gets punchy despite the high proof. Water releases some (not many) new impressions and smooths the taste but to be honest - I prefer the neat dram not least because it is not punchy at all.
