These 2004/2005 SV CS Ledaigs are all pretty good, but this one is exceptional. My favorite so far.

As close to perfection as you can get with peat and sherry at a young age. A super clean and flawless (European oak?) ex-Oloroso butt frames and directs the dirty, farmy, herbal, meaty, maritime Ledaig distillate in all the right ways. Cured meats, smoked fish, grilled tomato, barbecued bacon, a whole array of spices and herbs (clove, aniseed, chives, rosemary, thyme), leather, tobacco, coffee, dark chocolate... It just goes on and on. No sulphur, no unwelcome signs of youth, absolutely no sting from the murderously high ABV... It's kind of miraculous, really. Everything went right here.

Wait, what? You can actually drink this at 60.4%. Sure, a burn eventually builds up, but it's not impossible. Full-on tobacco-and-leather attack, followed by barbecue smoke, with a fruity ketchup sweetness. Berry jams, wild honey and dark chocolate are also in the mix.
With water: the smoke comes out more now, becoming increasingly fragrant and intertwining perfectly with the (I'm now pretty sure:) European oak. One of these bottlings where you almost can't really believe it's a single cask and not a vatting because everything fits together so seamlessly. Dry, nutty, leathery, smoky, softly sweet yet pleasantly tart, with an amazing texture. A benchmark.

Interminably long, perfectly balanced between the smoke, the dry, elegant sherry, and the spicy, herbal oak.
