A typical modern day younger Highland Park single cask
    • Nose
      86 86
It's definitely Highland Park. Opens on that heather honey with soft aromas of highland smoke. Vanilla pods and honey are the base layer, some apples and gummy bears are added to the mix.
With time the smoky element becomes refined and it turns to a more burnt wood aroma. Citrus notes develop, namely orange peel followed by some darker berries.
With water is picks up the sweetness, more gummy bears and some caster sugar.
    • Taste
      83 83
Hot on arrival, lots of alcohol and plenty of burn. There's some sour elements in there, the orange peel is making an appearance. Hot peppers, lots of spices and plenty of burn continue on the tongue and overpower anything else.
Water calms the heat on the paper but at the same time exposes it for being quite one dimensional
    • Finish
      80 80
Hot with new oak for a medium and disappointing finish. With water the fire is gone but some sour oak remains

It ’s nothing, it ’s worth the price. It is said that the SMWS's tasting committee is really powerful. When reading tasting words, he often looks dumbfounded. After writing his own words, he still finds it necessary to convince.
    • Nose
Juicy fruits ripening to cracked skin, apricots, plums, cherries, cherries jam, brown sugar, very sweet honey, heather, vanilla, very slight pyrotechnic gas.
    • Taste
Jam, orange peel, lemon, honey, caramel, licorice, oak, Chinese medicine, pepper, ash, black chocolate, roasted coffee beans.
    • Finish
      Medium, oak, nuts, herbs.

  3. Nergal scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

SMWS tasting notes: The nose was a volcanic eruption of sweet heat like raspberry jam gurgling and bubbling on the stove. Puffs of smoke
carried the alluring aromas of burning applewood and roast duck with honey-coated vegetables. A complex floral
character was definitely present like heather and bog myrtle but also with lavender, thyme and rosemary. The palate
continued along a path of roasted meat, perhaps venison or pork with devilishly tempting juicy crackling that had been
singed to charcoal along its edges. Heavy liquorice and star anise combined with salted caramel and the dark berries of rich fruitcake but also with the citric tang of fresh grapefruit. The finish merged smoky and ashy wood with earthy herbs and the suggestion of chocolate sauce.
