Nose

Smoke, ashes, red fruits (raspberry, strawberry, some dark grapes, dark cherries), dried fruits, raisins, overripe peaches and oranges, hints of caramel, great Amarone influence.

Taste

Sweet spicy smoke. Tobacco, red fruits again very present, tar, cigar punch, dark chocolate, leather.

Finish

Long. Liquorice, red fruits, tobacco, ashes.

Comments

After the Octomore 7.2 Syrah another delicious wine finish. Of course the Amarone is calling the tune, red fruits and berries going a long way down with the very present smoke. A very well balanced malt but a bit to dry at the end. Concluding the 7.2 Octomore is in my opinion a nuance better intermeshed (the Octomore character and the Syrah finish). It's hard to get the Sauternes and the Amarone pulling on the same rope. Therefore it is a great result.

Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10

Nose

Earthy peat with apricot jam. There are hints of smoked meat, grass and flowers... barbecue in a hayfield? But what jumps out at you the most beside the very pleasant peat is the fruitiness and sweetness from ripe oranges and berries.

Taste

Wonderful right from the first sip! Gentle smoke with plenty of oak and dark chocolate. Sweet red fruits, cherries and strawberries, mixed with slightly bitter yellow fruits, oranges and apricots.

Finish

The peat stays with you but does so in the background, leaving room for cherries and bitter chocolate to shine through. Red wine grapes and dry oak later.

Comments

This is a lovely dram with peat that is gentle and perfectly balanced alongside sweet aromas. No water required at all.

Nose

Smoked almonds, apricot and a hint of vanilla.

Taste

Smoke with a gentle sweetness. Balanced combination of sweet wine with smoke.

Finish

Very long, creamy, almost like whip cream. After a while a wisp of black currants and red grapes.

Octomore 8.2 - rauchige Kirschen triffts. Insgesamt richtig geil ohne Wasser!

CHARACTER Exotic, rich and fruity. Layered and complex, this is all about the cask story.
AROMA Peat smoke comes first but not dominant, there is red fruit, aniseed and barley sugar/boiled sweets. Smoke weaves between the other notes as they come, stewed apple, raspberry, blackcurrant, dried apricots and chocolate. Orange, mince pies and Turkish delight hint at the cask history then cherry wafers and coconut open out to floral notes of hay, geranium and Parma violets.
TASTE Warming and sweet, deep fruit and satin-like smoke. The oak feels a little dry then lifts to become toasted bread, bubble-gum sweetness and strawberry Jam. Adding a drop or two of water opens up the Islay DNA of salt spray, ozone and citrus. As it opens you find rose petal, Turkish delight, praline and more strawberry jam, all the while the smoke is in the background holding everything together.
FINISH Typical Octomore. Smoke comes through, a dry peat smoke, with malted barley and cherry, then goes out on its own..
COLOUR Ruby red

"INITIATION BRINGS PROVOCATION. ALL OF THE OPULENT SPIRIT IN 08.2 SPENT THE FIRST SIX YEARS OF ITS LIFE IN ONE OF THREE DIFFERENT STYLES OF WINE CASK.

French Mourvedre – a red wine grape that has a reputation for producing intense red fruit, and strong, earthy, even gamey flavours.

Austrian sweet wines – full bodied and charming with an ability to challenge convention with innovative techniques.

French Sauternes – casks from the Graves section in Bordeaux that previously held some of the most revered and exclusive dessert wines the world has ever seen.

All of the above were second fill casks which had calmed the wood perfectly in preparation for a longer maturation with the mighty Octomore before being ACEd into fresh Amarone casks for a period of two years.

The Octomore 08.2 edition is:

167ppm

Distilled in 2008 using 100% Scottish barley, from 2007 harvest
